The Maltings is an excellent venue to enjoy a pint or two in but having been billed as THE real ale emporium in York by both the GBG and local info, I was disappointed by the range available. The Roosters Yankee, having said that, was tremendous, great beer, well kept and presented. Other options were: Black Sheep, Burton Bridge Dom Dog Stout, Broughton Champion Double, Warwickshire Castle Mild and Crown Sundra. It's still a must visit in York and you're certain to find a decent pint but probably not to be compared to the best that Sheffield, for example, has to offer for beer variety.

UPDATE - April 2011

Still a great place for a pint but again, given the 7 handpumps available, I found the beer range relatively unexciting. Still, enjoyed a very good pint of Roosters Leghorn and a 'nightcap' of Milestones Stout at 6%.

Always a good range of ales on tap, can get really busy here. It's always one on the list when visiting York. Enjoyed the Roosters, but would visit again at a quieter time.

Always call into this Ale House when in York, and it is featured in the 2010 Good Beer Guide. Food is good and ales superb. On offer today were Black Sheep Bitter, Black Sheep Golden Ale, Roosters YPA, York Guzzler, Jarrow McConnells Irish Stout, Fyfe Lion Slayer, and Green Tye Indian Summer. Those tried were excellent. This place never changes, and is always popular.

Green Jack Trawlerboys was on the next day. Cannot wait for the October festival. Caravan is booked in already.

March 2011 update.
Called in today and enjoyed Roosters Orange Blossom Ale and Old Cannon Best Bitter along with infamous Chilli and Chips. Should be served with plenty of serviettes for runny eyes and nose. It is a killer, but I did finish it. Haven't suffered from it......yet!

Worth the walk from the main part of town, but be aware that on weekends it can be really busy, and you will lucky to get a seat as they serve food including the notorious chilli (beware!). Great real ale on top as well as good bottled selection: usually have selection of fruit beers and wines if you are a fan.

Situated close by the end of Lendal Bridge over the River Ouse, the Maltings is a long established real ale orientated pub that really should not be missed on any York crawl.

It's the first pub that you come to when you leave the railway station, a 5 minute walk away in the direction of the City Centre. Don't let the rather forbidding black painted exterior discourage you.

It's a bare boarded single bar pub with the atmosphere and décor of an ale house, notably decorated with old enamel signs ( eg Rowntrees, Wills, Gold Flake ) and, unusually, a ceiling that is covered with old wooden doors.

A blackboard outside tells us that the Maltings was the "Cask Ale Pub of Britain 1998". It's been a CAMRA Good Beer Guide regular in recent years. The pub is advertising its 18th Anniversary as The Maltings and is having a "Coming of Age" Beer Festival for three days this October.

The pub normally has 7 real ales and 4 ciders on. On my recent visit, beers on included Black Sheep and Roosters YPA ( and a few others which I forgot to note ). With the exception of a beer called Chockwork Orange ( ABV 6.5% - £ 3.50p ) , beers were priced between £ 2.80p and £ 3.10p. The Roosters YPA - £ 2.90p - was in good form. Drinkers of foreign and bottled beers are unlikely to be disappointed by the selection available.

This is an excellent pub to start or finish a crawl of York's many fine pubs and should not be missed

Cant add much to the excellent reviews below, this is a good ale house with a quirky interior.I particularly enjoyed the ram and ewe clock above the bar and the old VD clinic notice, both a good reminder of the joys and pitfalls of the nearby Micklegate bar scene. Not much totty action in here but solid ale quality.I was a tad disappointed by the ale range but did enjoy the Rooster's Yankee.Close to the station and below the ramparts of Lendal bridge ,the pub stands next to two large Aviva office blocks and should be visited on any crawl in the city.

There were a half dozen or so ales on during my visit – I noticed Black Sheep Bitter, Rooster Yankee, and the one I had, York Brewery Guzzler, which was excellent. Mrs R was also highly impressed by the quality of the filter coffee on offer, which she said was the best she had had in a York pub. I didn’t notice any food or see any menus – at least there were none available at 4.0 PM on a Tuesday, although maybe there are at other times.
This pub almost defies description. I very rarely like pubs that are painted black, as this one is, as they generally indicate an interior that has been left devoid of any character. But this is most definitely an exception to that rule. There are odd things everywhere in here; doors on the ceiling, parts of doors on the front of the bar counter, a toilet bowl in situ next to the table at which we sat, old train tickets next to one of the fireplaces, masses of old metal plate adverts on the walls for such things as Ogden’s St Bruno Flake and Albion Brewery Fine ales and Stouts. Above the fireplace in the little room on the right is a Fuller’s Brewery mirror, which is an unusual sight this far north. There is some floor tiling in front of the bar counter as you enter the pub, the layout of which indicates that the internal structure, including the position of the bar counter, was once very different from what it is now.
I would call this a quirky sort of pub, of a distinctly individual and unique nature, which may have been deliberately designed to look a bit shabby. Nonetheless, it is still very much a real pub, and one to which I would very much like to return.

Famous eccentric pub, the nearest good one to York railway station. Always Black Sheep Bitter plus six changing guests on the handpumps, classier European beers on draught and in bottle, generous helpings of food available from the Soup Dragon. Almost always busy due to the high quality of the beers and the pub's character. The customers are best described as “eclectic”. The interior is largely tatty and made of timber offcuts, decorated with old enamel signs. The ceiling and bar front are made of old doors. Occasional beer festivals are held here. A unique, wonderful pub and not to be missed.

Basic pub and a heaven for Real Ale lovers with a wide selection always available including Black Sheep Best & York Guzzler. A wide selection of imported beers and lagers along with a range of ciders cater for most tastes.
Food available at lunch times.
Very little parking but close to the railway station.
Part of LocAle.

### now has an "Adult Creche"!!!
