The black painted exterior gives the place the look of a rock venue or maybe a goth spot but once inside this is a very decent pub indeed with lots of old tin advertisements and signs on the walls and ceiling, a sign near the bar from days gone by listing local VD clinics (!), a through fireplace, part boarded and part tiled floor and regular seating at benches and small stools. The landlord and I assume landlady were very friendly and efficient and clearly passionate about good beer, I had a decent chat with him while being served. They had been told about our sizeable group visiting and helpfully roped an area off for us which was a nice touch. As well as the tin signs there are various CAMRA awards on display including the local branch cider POTY 2014. Ciders were from Biddendens, Fanny's Bramble, Farmer Jim's and Old Rosie. Beers were Rooster's Yankee, York Guzzler, Bad Company Mutual Aid, Squawk Pale Ale, Green Duck Drunken Duck, Black Sheep Golden Sheep and Slater's Smoked Porter. Food is served and I spotted a few portions coming out that contained proper home cut chips which is getting rarer.
An outdoor paved area has benches above caged in chunky white stones.
Apart from my spoons breakfast earlier this was my first pub of a day long crawl of York, it set the standard well.

A small pub with a quite attractive frontage handy for the station, very busy on a Friday lunchtime,so much so the bar was a few deep with customers waiting to be served, however the guy behind the bar was pretty on the ball and you generally got served in turn.Several beers were available to choose from,my Roosters Yankee was in good condition though maybe lacking in flavour slightly, this is the nature of cask beer though and it was perfectly acceptable .An enjoyable pub and definately worth inclusion on a jaunt around the local hostelries.

Enjoyed 2 visits to this pub while staying in York this week both for the beer and the food from the Dragons Pantry. Beer range good and had them from Tring, Great Orme, Rudgate and Hand Drawn Monkey breweries on Saturday, and a different Hand Drawn Monkey beer and one from North Riding today. All excellent. It can get ever so crowded though and difficult to get a table due to its popularity though. The extended room does help and the outside drinking area will be great when the weather warms up.

The above was in March 13 and we called yesterday lunchtime and found a great selection of ales. Enjoyed beers from 4T's, Northern Monk and Milestone breweries. There was a continuous flow of people in and out of this popular bar.

This is a welcoming, compact two room pub, just a short walk from York railway station. The interior is fairly dark, thanks to the predominance of dark wood panelling and the tile floor. Unusually, the ceiling appears to be constructed from old doors, which gives the place a bit of quirky charm. You enter into the bar area, with the servery on the rear wall and bench and low stool seating either side of the front door. Lots of nice old enamel advertisement signs decorate the walls, covering a range of products from years gone by. There is a fireplace on the left hand wall, which also serves the new second room – part of a much needed extension that opened recently. This room has a wooden floor with a fair bit more seating, mostly in the shape of low stools, and gives access to a small outdoor area to the side of the pub. There are menus on most tables and a quick flick through one suggested good, hearty pub grub at reasonable prices, with most main meals around the £6.50 mark. TV’s and music are notable for their absence and a sign outside rightly notes that this is the sort of pub where you can master the art of conversation.
The beer range here is one of the pub’s great strengths with a well put together selection covering various styles and strengths. On my visit the choice was from Roosters Franklin (£3.10), Black Sheep Bitter, Peakstones Rock Oblivion, York Guzzler, Revolutions Fairytale, Milestone Donner & Blitzed and Downton Dark Delight. In addition, there is a decent keg range including the likes of Kozel and Brewdog Punk IPA. Boards detailed four ciders, twenty-five whiskies and a simple wine list, which should cover the needs of any discerning drinker. Should further evidence of the pub’s excellence be required, I should point out that opposite the bar there is a certificate declaring the Maltings to be the ‘AFC Bournemouth Exiles Pub of the Year – Season 1998/99’. As an avid Cherries fan myself, I can think of no finer recommendation.
This is a nice, cosy drinker’s pub that focuses on the things that make pub-going a real pleasure. I can only agree with ROB about the success of the extension and would suggest that this should be one of the first pubs to consider for any crawl around York, which, in a city with such a great drinking scene, is no mean feat.

Now has a brand new extension which increase the space inside the pub by about half. There's also now an outside smokers area on a terrace. The beer was just as good as always during our two visits this week. The pub feels a lot more comfortable now with the extra space, previously it's been rammed when we've called. Nice job guys.

Called in on Sunday lunchtime when for once it was reasonably quiet in here and we managed to get a seat. The usual gaggle of regulars around the bar and a few stray tourists. As always the beer was in top condition. I can't remember the last time we came to York and didn't call in here. Long may it continue.

This is an excellent pub that is almost always very busy. Has quirky things around the walls e.g. an old 1p slot machine that still works. Great selection of ever changing beers that are all kept in peak condition. Very friendly with a good mix of locals and tourists. A must vist pub whilst in York. I had a pint of Cathedral Rentgius on Wednesday evening before moving on, which was top notch as usual.

Popped in for a quick pint between the city and the railway station on a busy saturday early evening (14th Jan), the pub was nicely buzzing - busy but the staff were their usual professional and fast serving selves in spite of the usual ditherers who take an age to choose a beer off the blackboards, still given the wide range of ales available that may be understandable. I had Nook Cherry Stout which was a quite marvellous pint. I still managed to get a seat at a table that was thankfully clean and free of debris unlike in some popular pub chains I could mention. Trade doesn't seem to have suffered as a result of the York Tap opening up the road, there is obviously room for the eccentricity of the Maltings along side the metrosexual appeal of the York Tap in the beer mecca that is York.

My partner and I revisited this pub on Saturday January 7. We found staff reluctant to stop talking to their friends in order to serve us drinks.Found the beers to be mediocre. Staff seemed fanatical with clearing/cleaning the tables. The table in front of us was cleaned 3 times in 10 minutes! We only just put empty glasses on the table when they were removed and the table cleaned!! This delightful pub now seems to be more concerned with customers wanting food than those wanting a good pint or two of beer!

A long standing real ale venue of York.Always a good choice of real ales and the pub seems quieter at lunchtimes. The ceiling is covered in old doors.5 mins. from the railway station so a good place to start and finish your visit to York.

This pub used to be called the Lendal Bridge Inn and it was a Stones tied house things have changed since then and it now has a daft name but some really good real ales on the bar.
Once inside i could'nt see a lot of the pub as it was very busy so it was only a quick one for me i noticed about 6 real ales on and i had a drink of Roosters Yankee and this was a very nice drink i did'nt get to note the other beers as it was to full in here.
The drink was very nice but i would have prefered to visit the pub when it is a bit quieter.
