Basic wedge slaped bar on a street corner. There is a nice tiled frontage but the rooms have been filled out a little functionally rather tahn traditionally.

Its ok, a beer drinkers local type bar.

5 real ales, well kept

This traditional Victorian pub is well worth a visit. You will always see a good range of Thornbridge ales here as Thornbridge Brewery own this pub. Five Thornbridge ales on handpump on our visit, plus two guests. The pub consists of one large room, bar and a snug. Some original highly glazed Victorian tiles in the passage. Friendly and chatty staff, no music. I went for the Thornbridge Wild Swan and Whim Old Izaak.

This is a lovely, traditional street corner pub which has retained its layout from the interwar period. Originally opened as a hotel due to problems getting a licence, the place was eventually taken over by the Ind Coope brewery, whose 1931 refit forms the basis for the pub as it is today. A more recent refurbishment in 2001 was sensitively carried out and restored a number of original features, winning the English Heritage Pub Design Award 2003 as a result. The main bar has a diamond patterned tile floor and a fine glazed brick servery. Wooden backed padded banquettes run around most of the room, complimented by some low stools, whilst some old pictures and a large Ind Coope mirror line the walls. A corridor runs down the back of the pub with a small drinking ledge and pleasing tiling throughout as well as a hatch giving access to the servery. Following the corridor, you eventually reach a snug set into the narrow part of this wedge shaped pub. The room has some original fixed seating and was being used by a chess society on my visit, which limited my chances to snoop around. Music played quietly throughout my stay, but the buzz of conversation was more prominent.
The pub is currently tied to the Thornbridge Brewery and three of their ales were available in the shape of Brother Rabbit, Halcyon and Juvenia. Three other hand pumps offered guest ales which were Saltaire Pride and Stateside IPA (£3.50), with Dark Star Espresso having recently gone off. The Stateside IPA was pretty good, although not my favourite beer from that particular brewery.
This is an excellent, atmospheric pub that is well worth a look for the interior alone. I was pleased to see some interesting guest ales available and would rank this as one of the best pubs at this end of the city centre.

Popped in to the Bath Hotel and can confirm Thornbridge beer occupies 3 or so of the pumps, with Dark Star also getting a look-in on our visit. Pretty quiet in mid-afternoon: just us, the bar-maid and local walking wounded who seem to regard the pub as some sort of alternative to hospital. Hopefully the evening sees more drinkers (and rather fewer cuts & bruises).

The room we occupied was tiled in a classy black & white pattern, but we didn't explore too much further. Pretty good - I'd call again.

Now taken over by Thornbridge brewery, with three or four of their beers alongside some well-appointed guests (my Saltaire wasn’t the best of the evening by a long shot however). The pub does get cold and there seems to be a bit of reluctance to light the fires for some reason. Otherwise all remains as before, even the apparent lack of customers when everywhere else was busy. Still well-worth a visit if in Sheffield.

August 2009
Wedged-shaped corner pub (not a hotel bar!) with a really charming interwar interior with the pub separated into two distinctly separate rooms, décor-wise; a lounge bar and public bar. The main bar is in the public area but there's also a nice little serving hatch in lounge bar – if you can get the barman's attention. Four ales normally available (one was turned on my visit); my Sheffield Brewery Mild was pretty good. Daily papers were available. Sadly, like the Red Deer up the road, this place was empty at a time when I would have expected so see customers. Again, I guess this must be down to there being a lack of students as my visit was outside of term-time. I would have loved to have stayed for longer but time was running short by this stage. Overall, highly recommended and worth the longish walk from the train station (or the much shorter tram ride). Rating 9.

The Bath Hotel has now been taken over by Thornbridge Brewery. I called in there last night to find that the previous haphazard mix of pumps and fonts had been replaced by a phalanx of Thornbridge pumps, with one token guest ale. Unfortunately, I dislike Thornbridge beers and the solitary guest was Dark Star's American Pale Ale, which is also not to my taste. If you like really hoppy, in-your-face bitter beers, then this may well be the place for you.

The Bath has been my local for almost all of my 14 years in Sheffield, so this is a sad day for me. [Originally posted 11th May 2012.]

Update: I was dragged in here the other night and persuaded to taste Beadeca's Well, a 5.3% smoked porter or stout from Thornbridge. It was actually quite a decent beer, though I wouldn't want to drink a lot of it at that strength. (The name apparently comes from the original name of the present day Bakewell, where Thornbridge brewery is located.)

The beer range had been modified, with just three Thornbridge ales on offer, plus three guests and, fairly well hidden on the back bar, a draught real cider too.

Just a short walk from the Dev Cat. More of a traditional establishment with a medium sized room where the bar is situated and a more compact room around the other side. Photos of the interior provide all the description needed for the main room.

Barnsley bitter, Boggart Rum Porter, Odyssey Pale Ale, Abbeydale Deception and Tetley Bitter were on handpull. A good place that I would happily return to.

Previous reviewers have described the pub very well, but I would just like to mention that the Bath features a drinking corridor. This may have escaped notice because people will persist in walking through it in search of toilets, the other bar, the exit. When it's busy, and people start shouting to make themselves heard, this is sometimes the only place you can have a conversation at reasonable levels.

When I moved to Sheffield in 1997, I quickly decided to make this my local. In those days there was only Tetleys Bitter and Mild, plus a rebadged "house beer", but the genuine feel of the pub and the friendly atmosphere was the same as it is today.

The present landlord took over in 2001 and effected a transformation that was entirely in keeping with the pub's character and history, and he thoroughly deserved the award for the work that he put in.

Tetleys Bitter is still always available, plus usually an Abbeydale, often an Acorn, plus a variety of interesting changing guests from all over the country. The lagers include Duvel Green (6.8%), Schneider Weisse and a Kriek. A real cider is sometimes available in summer. There is music on Sundays generally, but there is also an ad hoc folk session on Mondays.

The Bath is a back street pub that is on the edge of the city centre.
Once inside here the pub is unaltered i went in a largish long room with the bar to the right this room was really nice and there were a few other people having a drink.
I had a drink of Acorn Barnsley bitter which was a really nice drink the other beers were Abbeydale Moonshine and Wentworth Imperial.
I thought this was a really nice pub and would have happily stayed for a few more drinks.

The first thing that catches the eye in this pub is the sympathetic restoration of the 1930's interior; A feat which has garnered this pub a CAMRA design award and a place on the national inventory of historic interiors. The lounge is a mixture of wood and tiling; the snug is smaller and sofa-oriented. Its a welcoming place with a relaxed atmosphere and, on my visit, featured Abbeydale Deception, Tetley's Bitter, Derwent W&M Mild and others beside. Deception, a straw-coloured pale ale, went down nicely. Another one in Sheffield that is definitely worth a visit.
