Very much as described below, right down to Nick’s description of the white van sect. The young male staff were rather amateurish, though the barman was at least personable. Food was formulaic and dull, with different elements in different dishes, arriving at different times. We had to prompt for a main course, which, it transpired, had been sitting on the side in the kitchen for 15 minutes even though ‘the till’ said it had been served. Other customers had brought in noisy children, some of whom pestered our dogs, and whose parents looked rather put out when we warned them not to. Two ales on, Bath Gem and Charles Wells’s HPA, both in good condition but not exciting. Not somewhere to which I’d rush back, but useful enough if passing on the canal and in need of a pint

It remains very popular with a wide clientele, from boaters to walkers to groups of more mature customers having lunch to, I'm afraid, a sweary white van contingent later in the afternoon. That it's the only pub you can be sure to be open on a weekday afternoon is an attraction, along with the vast array of other facilities documented below. Beer range remains unchanged, Courage Best and Bombardier Gold, and food is of the vast mountains of stodge genre.

A better beer range would make it a fine destination pub but as things stand we're in 'stop by if you're passing' territory.

Peculiar pub which is certainly making an effort (as described below) but somehow doesn't quite make it. Sampled a pint of Thwaites Lancaster Bomber which was in good order, and opening hours very good, but didn't feel inclinced to stay.

The Wharf is a very prominent and well-known pub due to it's position on the main Banbury-Southam road and the Oxford Canal.
The draws are many with various services offered to boaters, a back garden looking onto the canal, a front terrace and a regular food offer.
Inside is unexceptional with a mish mash of modern furniture.
Only two handpumps offering ale with Wells Bombardier Burning Gold and Courage Best on. The latter was better than I'd hoped for but we weren't tempted into a second.
Much to visit for here but beer isn't the draw.

Originally the George and Dragon, but the new name is appropriate given it's location on the Oxford Canal, and even more so now that the proprietors have opened a canal store, launderette and hairdressing salon in some of the original outbuildings which attracts a lot of liveaboard boaters throughout the year.Muddy boots and dogs welcome !
You enter from the car park with a small bar infront of you and the drinking area to the right side, including a lower back room with some soft chairs, sofas and a non sport flatscreen. It's well used as a pub,and a small hamlet is scattered around the main road which passes the front.
To the left of the bar,up a series of levels is the dining area in rustic decor ,quite large with numbered tables just order from the bar. There are early bird meal deals,a traditional pub grub menu with some megasized options for the ravenous, and the portion sizes we all received were most generous.Food quality was good although it is hard to go wrong with grills, steaks and burgers but on a sub zero night the food hit the spot.
At the bar there are five handpumps with ,on my trip, two real ciders and just two real ales Hooky (OK condition,a regular) and Charles Wells Good Stuffing. It was a shame there wasn't a better ale line up ,but as I believe this pub is leased from Punch that may explain the poor choice.Although the pub has a chain vibe and some of the original features have been obscured by various refurbs,it does appear the leasees are making a big effort and for that alone it's worth another visit.

Excellent Food and drink.
A word to the unwary ,I ordered a pint of each Handpull from left to right in turn. The fourth pint turned out to be cider ! Although nice, I am not a cider drinker !
Also on site, a small shop for boaters, a hair-dressers, and camping and caravanning sites behind the pet pig stys .
Live music Friday nights.
