Aqualung . left this review about The Roebuck Inn

I remember coming here back in the 1990s when it was a carpeted Ind Coope house with a pet parrot in the bar rather than the more basic style ale house it is now. It's long and narrow with a wooden floor, a dart board at one end and TVs on that nobody seemed to be watching.
As noted below the beer choice is rather mainstream with the only items of interest for me being Gates Burton Ale and Peakstones Rock Black Hole. One of the eight hand pumps was unused and one had a cider. I went for the Black Hole beer which was in good nick.
I thought the unwatched TVs and mainstream beers let this place down but it's worth a look.

An impressive array of eight hand pumps on the bar here, and the even more impressive lincrusta frieze, picked out in green and gold, is almost worth a visit on its own. This is a bare-boards ale house with a good honest feel to it, and while the beer range is not terribly adventurous, it's definitely worth a visit, especially if arriving in Burton by train.

Beers available at the time of my visit were Bass, Pedigree, Abbot, Everards Original and Theakstons Old Peculier, plus Old Rosie cider - I had the Original, which was in good condition and at around £3 a pint, which is fairly normal for Burton.

Date of visit: 22nd November 2014

Once upon a time this pub was the Ind Coope brewery tap. They still serve Ind Coope Burton Ale on one of their handpumps. I liked the look of this pub as soon as I walked in. The dark wood panelling looked great and the lincrusta frieze is brilliant (although I didn't know it was a lincrusta frieze until I've just read OB's review below) :-)) There's a dartboard to the rear and even on a Friday evening one of the tables was being used to play dominoes. 8 handpumps with 7 beers on. Nothing out of the ordinary with Pedigree, Abbot, Draught Bass etc, but for a trip back in time I had the Ind Coope Burton Ale and very good it was too. There's a small beer patio at the rear, a quiz machine at the front of the pub and live music was advertised for the Sunday. A proper pub that I really liked.

Old Boots left this review about The Roebuck Inn

A long thin corner pub in Victorian style not far from the station, the interior has some fine features, the lincrusta frieze round the walls and along the elegant counter in particular. Decorated in restrained style with a few maps, cartoons and railway pictures. The traditional wooden furniture, cast iron fireplace and bare boards are in keeping with the overall feel of the place. The ceiling is partly plastered and papered and part dark varnished tongue & groove in the old style, this could be oppressive but to me it’s cosy. There are screens at both ends and free wi-fi. An outside drinking area is at the front by the door and there’s a yard at the back. Eight handpumps offer a selection of decently kept beers, obviously Pedigree, but Bass, Ringwood, Greene King and a local brewer Dancing Duck, make an appearance.

Soup Dragon left this review about The Roebuck Inn

A nice looking 19th century corner pub that has a patio area at the front. The pub has a forward facing gable and a curved end. It is in white render with black paintwork.

The interior has a single narrow-ish room that curves around and along the lengthy serving bar on the left. There room ends in an area where there is a dart board and a TV (not on at my visit) and where bands set-up for live gigs. The decor is white walls, with some wood panel and green embossed wood (running along the walls and the bar), with a wood floor and mainly white ceiling (some wood too). There is a fireplace with a grate and general traditional tables, chairs and stools. There are a few pictures on the walls and a few maps too. The service was very friendly and there was a small mixed clientele. The background music was general and quiet.

Beer; usual tap stuff with Abbot, Pedigree, Oakham Bishop's Farewell and a very good Ind Coope Burton Bitter on handpull

I found this a friendly traditional kind of place. I was more than happy to stop off here and would go back without question. Worth dropping in.

i disagree with the previous reviews. everytime i have been in the roebuck inn i have found the place to be friendly, clean and very inviting. the bar staff are all really nice. The pub has 4 real ales on, which are all kept very well and i have never had a bad pint in there! on sundays the pub is usually very busy which is nice to see in a pub these days with lots of business going into administration. as for being asked for i.d in a pub if you look under 25 its the bar staffs job, having worked in bars clubs and pubs before i have had to do this myself.

Richard Kotzen left this review about The Roebuck Inn

I went to the Roebuck Inn for their live music on a Sunday, ever so slightly as I like to find a nice place to sit or stand without getting in the way. Which usually serves me fine, though at the Roebuck there was a large problem, no matter where you stand in this pokey, small pub you're always in the way, and always in a band position. Also, even though I got their slightly early, expected to see the band soundcheck to get a flavour for them, due to the locals wanting to watch the football the management didn't allow the band to set up til half an hour before go-time, which harmed the overall afternoon.

The drinks were average at best, nothing you wouldn't expect to find in an average local.
The location is nice as it's close to the train station and near the town centre
The smoking area and outdoor seating was boxy and intimidating (barred gates, large covered walls)

The staff were terrible. There was one member of staff who seemed to not care about the customers, about the entertainment the bar put on or anything like that, the only thing this woman seemed to do was scour for people to kick out and chat to the locals. Which strikes me as odd as a town centre pub, which is closest to the train station than any others, would often be one which allows all customers as opposed to treat them as outsiders.

Would definitely suggest Burtons other pubs for every possible aspect, the entertainment is handled better at places such as the Wetmore Whistle, while the location is nice at the Roebuck, places like the Devonshire Arms and The PepperTree suffice just as well, and have a better atmosphere. For general drinking, be it alone, with friends, on a night out, or a quiet summer day, there's always much friendlier places. This pub has turned away myself and a number of people I know who have been to this bar.

Definitely not a bar that looks as good as it's outdoor appearance!

Greeg Howe left this review about The Roebuck Inn

I was shocked and appalled at the level of service at this establishment, I was treated rudely by bar staff, and my I.D scrutinised for minutes at a time despite being in my twenties and visiting with my parents for a nice Sunday drink (60 56 respectively)the atmosphere was oppressive, and the pub it's self is too small to swing a cat and choice of drinks are fine, but not what you'd expect from a town once famed as the brewing capital of the world.
I'd suggest burtons
The Albion
Appleby
Devonshire Arms
Cottage brewery
or the wheatmoore whistle over this pub easily
