A rock and ale pub, which made for a nice change from the other places I did in Nottingham on my crawl. A bit of character here (if somewhat shabby); two snug rooms and a main bar connected by a winding corridor, the names of which (Charles and Cromwell) evoke Nottingham’s role in the Civil War (the pub was apparently used as a recruiting station). Six ales available on my visit, with the bar touting a good selection of local micros. There’s also some ciders and interesting bottled garb. 20p off for CAMRA members too. An agreeably alternative music selection was being played and a few of the punters fitted right into the theme. The pub is apparently built on Saxon-era caves if the diagram on the wall is to be believed. I liked this one and will be returning next time I’m in Nottingham.

Another terrific looking pub that claims to be the oldest in Nottingham. Also sporting the 'Ye Olde',this one claims foundation as 1240, though it is perched on caves too. It is an L-shaped building in white render, with part brick front facade - with its dormer windows, slight over-hang at one end and chimney stacks, Gothic fascia boards it looks like a mix from medieval through to modern.

The interior, when entered from the back, has two small snug rooms either side of the entrance corridor. These are called the Cromwell and King Charles rooms. They are quieter than the main room and are in yellow and red, wood floor and have a fireplace. I was treated to a bunch of thespians discussing the student play in the Cromwell room whilst munching their dinner. The main room is in Yellow and wood panel, with yellow and beamed ceiling and wood floor. It is supported by beams and central pillars. There are basic wood chairs and tables, with the occasional settle thrown in. The walls are adorned with ld photos and prints, with the ocassional mirror. They do food here but i haven't eaten so can't comment on it. There is no TV that i saw and the music is rock/alternative based and at a decent level. The service was great and there was a real mixed clientele at my visit.

Beer; usual tap stuff with Leffe and Burton Bridge Stairway to Heaven, Thornbridge Wild Swan, Castle Rock Harvest Pale Ale, Rudgate Ruby MILD, Notts Brewery EPA and Thieving Magpie's Rascal. The MILD was decent.

A great pub and another must really. Different music and feel to the place and a good rotation of beer (review was back in May) - have had Oakwells MILD since.

Well worth a visit, serves some great ales and has a great rock buzz about the place. Good music played and at a decent level. Staff friendly and helpful, I enjoyed the Mallards Duck'n'Dive, Guaranteed Sunshine Drink to the Dregs. Will spend a bit longer here next visit.

Another visit and nothing further to add. Enjoyed Magpie Midnight Porter from the excellent choice of ales. Good atmosphere from the early evening drinkers.

Above review 18.10.10. Revisited on Friday and enjoyed a beer that was difficult to identify, but appeared to be brewed by White Rose called Guaranteed Sunshine or Drink to the Dregs. It was one of the best of the day in my opinion . Also enjoyed an Acorn Embers beer. This pub is one to visit when in Nottingham, and the food has always been good when we have eaten here. In the 2012 Good Beer Guide.

Another visit to this top Nottingham pub late on a Sunday evening. As it was a Bank Holiday on the Monday the place was rocking with a live band on upstairs. The two main room were busy, but we had one of the two small snugs to the right of the bar to ourselves until another 3 people joined us after about 30 minutes. Great range of ales on the bar and efficient service. I had an Abbeydale Surreal Ale and an Oldershaw Heavenly Blonde, both were in top condition as they always are in here. The other half tells me that the red wine is good as well. A real mix of people from Goths & Rockers to middle aged couples. All in all a very good pub and one we never miss when in Nottingham.

Bare floorboarded ale house with lots of low beams etc. Always has a decent range of real ale on and I've never had a bad pint in here. Last time I called the landlord was polishing his helmet at the bar. I kid you not! Attracts bikers and rockers which is fine by me as it means decent music. CAMRA members get 20p per pint of with their CAMRA membership card as well.

Pub SignMan left this review about Ye Olde Salutation Inn

Another of Nottingham's historic old pubs, the Salutation is located alongside the busy Maid Marian Way, which distracts a bit from the place's feel, but that aside, this is an excellent pub. There is one large, main room which is quite open and has bare floorboards, half panelled walls and dark wood beams to create a nice traditional setting. Two snugs, one named after King Charles, the other after Cromwell, are decorated with various pictures relating to those individuals and look like they would be good for anyone wanting a bite to eat away from the rowdy main room.
The pub has some serious rock/biker credentials and I was treated to some rather excellent selections from the juke box which wasn't on too loud to upset those wanting a chat or a quiet pint. A rock karaoke night was also being promoted.
The beer selection, detailed on blackboards to the left hand end of the bar counter, was excellent and offered Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Oakham JHB, White Rose Spring Hoppiness, Wentworth Short and Stout, Nottingham EPA, Milestone Black Pearl and Cathorpe Doverbeck. Additionally there were several ciders on tap and a very strong bottled beer selection. I had the White Rose and found it to be in top condition and very thirst quenching. A basic food menu with a few pub standards was evident on my table, although nobody seemed to be eating whilst I was there.
I really liked this place and would suggest that it was one of the highlights of a very good crawl around town. There was a good crowd in when I visited and it's clear that the owners are onto a winner with their historic building, rock theme and excellent beer. A revisit is certainly on the cards.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Salutation

Famous old inn, although you can probably take the claimed date of 1240 with a proverbial pinch of salt. Certainly has plenty of character, with various side rooms in addition to the main bar. Plenty of characters there too, with bikers out in force on last visit but also a group of more timid-looking ghost hunters getting ready to visit the caves underneath. Excellent choice of real ales available, and at a reasonable price too (especially if you can claim the 20p CAMRA discount). Well worth seeking out.

Love coming to this pub that deserves its place in the 2011 Good Beer Guide for the good range of ales on offer. We enjoyed Caythorpe's Birthday Brew and Flipside Flipping Best this visit, and we will be back over the next few days as the Nottingham beer festival is on and there are casks up on stillage ready to supplement the beers on the bar over the next few days. The food is excellent here too.
