The Brown Cow is situated just to the east of the town centre across a busy dual carriageway. However, it's worth the effort to reach, as it is clearly one of Mansfield's better pubs.
There are 2 rooms, with an entrance doorway offering a choice of left or right. I chose what I believe to be the larger room to the right, which is split-level. A screen showed the beer list via Untappd. Everard's Tiger is the regular beer. Symposium from the same brewery was also on. Guests were Ossett Yorkshire Blonde & Blue Bee Sabro Columbus IPA, a 6.5% beer that I was quite ready for after the disappointment of the Rufford Arms and then checking into my hotel.
Ciders were Bottle Kicking Cider Company Scrambler, Seacider Passion Fruit Cider & Snail's Bank Fruit Bat. Craft beers were Siren Soundwave, Everard's Cast No Shadow & Neepsend Coyote.
A decent pub, but I had a good reason to drink up and move on.

Situated just outside the town centre on the road to Newark, this is an excellent red brick Everards pub notable for its beer range and the adjoining Cow Shed music venue. There are two bars, one traditionally furnished and one with industrial-type fittings, and an outdoor drinking area behind. Nearly all of the 12 handpumps were in use, offering Everards regulars such as Tiger but also their special brews – on this occasion the SMASH Mittelfruh Single Hop golden ale – along with a good selection from smaller breweries such as Lincoln Green, Abbeydale and Welbeck Abbey. Screens are used to show the list of which ales are on and a few craft keg beers are also on hand but food is not being served at present. Note that cask ales are discounted by 20% on Mondays but beware, they don’t open until 15.00 earlier in the week. Well worth the short walk across the ring road.

This was our first port of call when visiting Mansfield and if you get your bearings correctly, it's not too far from the railway and bus station. This pub was exceptionally good, so everywhere after this was a real let down.
The pub is split by the bar and a corridor into two main areas. The main bar area on the right of entrance and a traditional lounge on the left. There was also what's called a hidden garden around the back of the pub, which has sandstone walls and picnic benches and is a real suntrap.
The lounge side had low beam ceilings and the smaller further section was named the Robert Dodsley snug, after a writer who once lived next door to the pub.
Six ales on handpump on our Friday lunchtime visit, which were increasing in number the longer we stayed, and the barman informed us that he would have nine ales on for that evening. There was also six craft beers and three ciders to choose from. We went for the Raw Brewery Mucky Duck initially and then Tiny Rebel Hank 4% came on, which was a good session ale. Obviously this kept us here longer than anticipated. This is another Project William from Everards in conjunction with Raw Brewery.

Nice split level pub with I think a back bar/restaurant, just outside of the town centre on busy road.
Six real ales & six craft with Raw Brewery influence.
A kind of modern-trad mix, nicely laid out, tidy. some high benches & other more traditional seating. Map wallpaper.
Nice building, good beer.

Having half an hour to kill before the Tuesday night match at Field Mill stadium, and having exhausted the possibilities of the town centre, I walked randomly out in this direction and was pleasantly surprised to discover a Project William pub. A joint enterprise between Everards Brewery and in this instance Raw Brewery of Staveley, it's a big old roadside pub, cut off from the town centre by an inner ring road, so just the sort of place that needs a bit of a boost to stop it adding to the statistics of failed pubs. There are two decent sized rooms either side of a dividing wall, with the bar serving both areas. I counted eight beers listed on hand pumps, plus a Dark Star "craft" keg. Beers were from Brunswick, Muirhouse, Dukeries as well as Raw in the local area, plus more far-flung Arran and XT as well as one from Everards, of course. The barman was taking advantage of a quiet period to polish the brasswork, so I'm not sure that the trade justifies the large selection available at this time of the week, but the beer I had (Brunswick Damson Stout) was in good condition. I will be back for a longer session next time.
