Completely up itself gastro affair typical of the area. It claims to be a fifteenth-century building but you'd be pushed to tell. It's essentially a restaurant though if you're lucky you might find a table they haven't relaid after the previous diners left. Otherwise, like us, you're banished to the pleasant garden

Food wise it does nothing for me, nothing remotely edible on the menu - Lamb Shoulder Pie sounds particularly disgusting - but we chased down a packet of cheese and onion with a drink of Missenden Pale Ale in perfect condition.

Points added for beer quality - but go on a sunny day.

About a half-mile schlep out of Roald Dahl's former stamping ground, this pub's focus is primarily on the dry stuff, although the choice on the ale front was pretty decent with Sharp's Cornish Coaster, Tring Side Pocket and Malt the Brewery Starry Nights (the latter good on the beer miles). Two pints of the Starry Nights chimed in at £8.40 which is steep for a 4% ale, but perhaps reflects gastro pretensions. The area to the left of the bar appears to be original (the right-hand side of the building in the photo above) being as it is low-ceilinged and wooden-beamed, the area to the right of the bar appears to be a later extension and is higher-ceilinged, with less of the beams. More one to take a prospective date to than to add to a crawl, but the appearance of two local ales on means it's not necessarily one to be dismissed if in the area.
