A change of policy, or change of owners, since my visit five years ago: there are no longer any tea towels or mugs on sale. The good news is that there are half a dozen real ales in very good condition. We found this a friendly pub with a good atmosphere - it may be a little different at busy periods with the demands of tourists. The canal basin is well worth a visit, and the pub is easily reached from either Chinley station (walk to Whitehough then along the Peak Forest tramway trail), or Furness Vale (along the canal tow path) - a pleasant walk of about 25 to 30 minutes from either direction.

Although clearly geared towards the tourist trade - how many pubs do you see with a display cabinet of gifts beside the bar? - the Navigation is also a bit of a beer exhibition: six hand pumps is quite a lot for a small village pub. (The village of Bugsworth petitioned parliament in the 19th century to change its name to the more gentile Buxworth.) Actually, the building itself is quite extensive, consisting of what looks to be a string of cottages amalgamated over time, but the feel of the area around the bar is that of a village local, though to be fair my visit was not at a touristy time of the week.
Beers on the bar during my visit included two from Elland Brewery (Marzen and American Pale), Abbeydale Arson, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Robinsons Unicorn and York Terrier - perhaps strangely for a Derbyshire pub, one from a Cheshire brewery and five originating from Yorkshire's various parts. I had the Marzen, a cask conditioned lager that authentically reminded me of visits to Germany. I was tempted to buy a tea towel or mug commemorating Bugsworth Canal Basin as a memento of my visit, but somehow managed to talk myself out of the purchase. Maybe next time...

Large canal-side pub divided up into half a dozen or so seperate eating and drinking areas. Cosy and comfortable.Well kept range of four or so real ales, including the supurlative Taylors Landlord. Good food. Very popular.
