Stunning Fullers bank conversion which I got to enjoy a bit more this time - 14 years on! - as the worst of the after-work crowd had dissipated by the time I trudged in. Some staff were goofing about avoiding work but one of the few actually being conscientious enough to do a shift got me a stunningly good Gales HSB (NBSS 4.5) which makes me wonder why it isn’t listed in the 2024 GBG (though a reduction in guest cask probably hasn’t helped, as well as the sky-high prices). Shame about the atrocious thudding music which is not required nor wanted in a venue like this on a Thursday evening. To my surprise/disappointment it looks like you can no longer slip out the back and directly into the Wellington as the gate was padlocked. If you’ve not been before you really should - though the flaky staff, high prices and crap atmosphere might mean you put it on the backburner for the next time. It won't take much to turn this into a real winner though...

A towering ornate pub that used to be a bank and was converted by Fullers a few years back. The interior, with its grand opulence, extensive woodwork, Roma/Greco statues and cupola is magnificent. There is an upstairs balcony area and I believe the place has its own theatre as well. Due to the huge ceiling size I would say that perhaps some of the ambience is lost and it can feel a bit impersonal unless you’re in a large group. As for the beer, the island bar serves eight ales – six Fullers/Gales and two guests. My pint of Titanic was nice, if a little cold,. The prices are London-esque though, you’re paying for that ornate interior. Well-worth a sample pint here but I doubt I’d linger beyond one or two. Tip: the Wellington is next door (rear exit). Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Old Joint Stock

Stunning décor - one of the best bank conversions I've seen (although it was actually built as the library for the cathedral in the middle of the green opposite). The island bar layout and very high ceilings mean that there is plenty to see from almost any seat (and you get an interesting view from the rear mezzanine balcony, but this is often roped off). The Club Room (the former manager's office) is located at the back, and signage indicates a dining room and the theatre above, but I've never seen either. Small rear patio. Excellent choice of Fuller's and Dark Star cask ales from a total of 20 handpumps, with the former's London Porter being in particularly fine form on this occasion, as was Greedy Goose from Hook Norton from among the guests. Only quibbles are that you get charged London prices and it can take some time to get served if you stand at the wrong spot when busy (and it can be very crowded), but well worth a visit just to admire the interior.

Visited earlier in the week, and was rather busy at 4:15 on a weekday! I spotted 12 hand pulls at the bar, split across a bank to the front of the bar and another to the right hand side, so had to do a bit of shuffling round to take in the selection. I went for Solar Eclipse by Dark Star, at a rather expensive £2.60 for a half pint. There does appear to be a Fullers connection to the pub, and although on the face of it I don't recall the bar being dominated by their beers, I later discovered that Dark Star are owned by the same parent company as Fullers. No issues with service, despite there being a small wait to get served as you would expect when the pub is busy.

I may well call in again at some point, but probably wouldn't go out of my way to do so.
