The Kensington Tavern, Derby

An odd one, this, an old brick-built house with modern additions seeming slightly out of place in a street of mixed housing, small businesses and shops, all the buildings being at least 50 years younger, I would guuess, and some very recent indeed. It was fairly quiet here on my Sunday afternoon visit, but the landlord and a small group of regulars tried to make up for their lack of numbers with a bit of ribald banter. The tone of this can be gauged from the fact that the "house ale", the sole non-keg beer available, brewed by Ushers, is called Wrinkly Winkle; this may also account for the total lack of female customers. There were music videos playing on a screen in one corner, aimed at a rather different age group than all of those present. A distinct smell of cigarette smoke must have been the result of it drifting in from the external smoking area, as smoking indoors has been banned now for seven years. Date of visit: 19th October 2014
