The Plough & Harrow, Polegate

A brick and flint building in a remote downland village, somewhat under the gaze of the Long Man of Wilmington. Inside, it has the air of having been made over back in the nineties:just this side of twee, with a rather sepulchural bar and serving area.First impressions are important, and I quickly felt that for whatever reason, that this wasn’t really our sort of pub. On a more positive note, the pint of Hophead that I enjoyed in the garden was excellent, if a touch one dimensional, and there were pumps dispensing Westerham BB and the inevitable Harvey’s Sussex Best Bitter.The folk behind the bar were jolly and dog friendly, but I was irked to have to surrender my card if I wanted to run a tab, as we were sitting in the garden. On inspection, we considered the food over elaborate and over priced:helpings seemed on the small side, so we moved on to our beloved Cricketers Arms at Berwick. We’d really looked forward to coming here, on an infrequent day out. Perhaps it was me, but this pub could be a cracker.
