Platinum Bar, Sittingbourne

The pub name is taken from a character in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales however any similarity between the pub and a bit of culture ends. Anywhere that has Units 1 and 2 as the first line in their address isn’t likely to be a place that oozes character and this mundane plastic Wetherspoons by numbers doesn’t disappoint in this respect. Situated in the front of a hideous looking shopping mall, the open plan interior covers a large amount of floorspace but is quite dingy and soulless, not helped by the low ceilings. There are a couple of sofa sections and a raised section at the front designated as the Family Area (that seemed to be more of a pram park on my visit). On the plus side I was able to tick off some excellent Festival Ales although I am not sure what the usual offerings are on the ale front but with 6 hand pumps I would guess that the selection is a bit more limited than usual once the regular ales are taken into account. Overall, a pretty depressing place where even the most hardened ‘Spoon’s fan would struggle to conjour up any enjoyment from a visit.
