The Gillygate, York

The Gillygate was very sedate when the surrounding pubs were either packed or reasonably busy during my recent Saturday afternoon crawl of the area. The interior is split into three bars, but I didn’t venture from the front bar into the others as they were both empty. There was some background music playing and I didn’t spot any televisions. I found the service to be friendly from the barman who was tending four hand pumps and a standard draught selection. Food is available, but on the expensive side with sausage and mash coming in at £12. Accommodation is available in the Gillygate’s 12 rooms. There are better pubs in the area so I do not plan to return here when next in York.

Three room pub with a bar, side room and "the front room", looks foody and smells even more foody but it's no gastro pub there's straightforward food and each table has a bottle of red and brown sauce. Basically with a u shaped servery from a long gone double front layout with neat bay windows. Four pulls on the counter, with beers from Copper Dragon, Moorhouses, Bradfield and Jarrow labeled as a guest - teeth chatteringly cold but a decent pint after a warm. Big screens in both front rooms, showing silent news on my visit. Low level 80/90s music on the sound system. Carpet tile and board flooring with a selection of various sized tables and chairs. Each table also has a comment card, laudable but liable to abuse - I'd like to read some of the choicer ones. Seems to have a few regulars who aren't students although this was out of term time. Free wi-fi from the Cloud and quiz night Monday and Wednesday.
