This pub featured in the Good Beer Guide as recently as 2020, but appears to have gone downhill since then. On a cold Monday evening in York, it was just as cold inside and it was outside. With a choice of two doorways from the entrance, I chose the larger room on the left-hand side and didn't explore the right-hand side of the pub where there must be 2 further rooms.

Ales on were Theakston Best & Ossett Silver King. Just a handful of other punters were in. I can't say I was overly impressed. There are far better pubs in York.

A smartly modernised 'pub with rooms', but retaining a three room layout and a cheery atmosphere. It's all a bit monochrome in greys and blacks, with a few sports TVs for the locals. Ales on were Titanic Raspberry Pale and Tetley's Cask, with the Landlord and Theakstons Best having run out. Pleasant enough.

Real Ale Ray left this review about The Gillygate

Quite liked this pub, a good sized room on the left hand side, with a separate small front room and rear bar area. The staff were friendly and polite and they had a choice of two well kept ales from Ainsty Ales which we really liked. These were Ainsty Cool Citra 4.4% and Ainsty Blonde 4%. Worth a visit just for their beer, plus it's away from the tourist trap.
