A very nicely appointed multi roomed pub. The right hand room is mainly used for dining during food service times. It's quite olde worlde without being kitsch and there were quite a few people in the pub at about 12:30 on a Wednesday. A couple of TV's were on, but without the sound. 4 ales available on the bar and I had a rugby themed beer from Inveralmond called Tight Head. It was well kept and tasted fine, although it wasn't a particularly well brewed beer. It's a pleasant enough place to call in for one.

The Gillygate has been refurbished recently and is a great find just outside the city walls down the busy Gilygate road. The refurbishment has seen extensive renovation throughout the pub and it now has three very comfortable nicely decorated rooms all with their own bar for easy access to drinks. There is also a secret whiskey snug with curtain. The front and back bar each have four hand pulls which repeated the beers until recently when they have started to expand and offer a bigger choice. Some good beers feature with Castle rocks Harvest pale, elsie mo, Wychwood hobgoblin, St Austill tribute and proper job, Bradfield farmers blonde and Timothy Taylor landlord all featuring in the last couple of weeks.
This is a very steep pub in terms of price though with food and drink generally costing more than neighboring pubs. There beer pricing policy is also sometimes quite bizarre with most usually costing £3.40, sometimes rising to £3.50 and Sometimes £3.60 for no apparent reason (nothing to do with strength or "premium") I have ao frequently been charged more for the same drink on different rounds the same night.

On the whole a very nice pub that attracts good crowds and has a good atmosphere most nights, especially Wednesdays for the pub quiz (although in my opinion an outrageously expensive £1 per player!) Good beer and good food help this to be a good stop off for beer lovers, locals and tourists alike.

Steve C left this review about The Gillygate

The Gillygate was very sedate when the surrounding pubs were either packed or reasonably busy during my recent Saturday afternoon crawl of the area. The interior is split into three bars, but I didn’t venture from the front bar into the others as they were both empty. There was some background music playing and I didn’t spot any televisions. I found the service to be friendly from the barman who was tending four hand pumps and a standard draught selection. Food is available, but on the expensive side with sausage and mash coming in at £12. Accommodation is available in the Gillygate’s 12 rooms.

There are better pubs in the area so I do not plan to return here when next in York.
