The Wheatsheaf, Esher

I’ve little to add to what the previous reviewer had to say. It remains a very nice spot in which to enjoy a pint or two. The ales on offer when I visited the other day were London Pride, St Austell Tribute, Twickenham Grandstand, and the superb Surrey Hills Shere Drop. Mrs R and I also had a bite to eat in here. Main courses were £10+ and sarnies in the £6 - £7 range. The menu stated that the bread used for the sarnies was baked by a local baker, and I have to say they were of excellent quality. Personally I’m happy to pay top dollar for a sandwich if it’s matched by the quality. Some music was being played – The Stones no less – at background levels. This is a decent pub to which I would be happy to pay a return visit.

The pub is situated in an attractive location on Esher Green and close to one of the back entrances to Sandown Park racecourse. Outdoor seating to the frontage with some cover, internally the pub retains a number of defined separate areas. The light wood bar is in the main room opposite the entrance, down a few stairs to the right is the dining area with laid tables, then to the left are a couple of smaller separate areas. Seating is conventional throughout, the flooring wooden apart from a carpeted side room, green wainscotting to the lower walls with light coloured upper areas and ceiling. decor naturally includes plenty of horse racing related pictures as well as golf pictures and framed cigarette cards as well as local scenes. There are a few gardening/agricultural implements on the walls too, plus a few old oil lamps dotted around. Daily papers laid out on top of a barrel. As regards beer, four handpumps on the bar, my visit had Pride, Doom Bar, Landlord and Hepworth's Prospect (£3.50). Food menus were on the bar and two chalboards advertised specials plus cheaper bar snacks. The TV on the back wall was off on Saturday PM. To the rear is a small garden area and a separate old barn building available for hire. Accommodation is also available. A nice spot, especially on a sunny afternoon.

With Esher Green at the front and Sandown Park just round the side, this pub combines being a friendly local with picking up passing trade. L-shaped interior, with seating outside to the front and rear and a large car park at the back. Three ale pumps - had very good pints of London Pride and Doombar last night, and Youngs was on the third. Has good reputation for food though I haven't eaten here yet.
