The Queens Head, Wokingham

When I first came here years ago it was a Morland's pub. Morland's are long gone and thankfully there were no Speckled Hen varieties. It's clearly quite an old pub perched up a small embankment off the main road. Inside it's a small single room with wooden floors. There are a few small tables with benches around the walls and some chairs. It was empty on my Friday afternoon visit. This is one of an increasing number of Greene King pubs that offer a varying selection of ales rather than the usual Suffolk dross. There is a house beer called Queens Head Bitter that apparently is re-badged Hardy & Hanson Bitter. Abbot was the only other GK beer on the six hand pumps. The other four beers were Loddon Hoppit, Vale Ecstasy Of Gold, West Berks' Magg's Mild and Windsor & Eton Knight Of The Garter. I went for the mild (£3.50) which was in excellent nick and served in a West Berks glass by the friendly lady behind the bar. I thought this was a great little pub, much improved since the Morland days and despite the Greene King ownership I would return.
