A rather gorgeous little historic pub in a splendid row of period houses. Nice and woody. with proper floorboards, beamed ceilings and wall panellings, with a couple of real fireplaces. A couple of old locals and some great music added to the atmosphere. A Greene King pub, so Abbot and the seasonal ale on, plus a welcome and looked-after Rebellion Roasted Nuts. Very pleasant and almost an 8.

Seems to be firing on all cylinders now. The inside is well maintained and has a nice traditional pubby vibe – feels like a freshening/smartening-up has taken place since my last review. Five cask, a house beer of unknown provenance but probably Morlands, GK Abbot (NBSS 4), Stardust Optic (3.5) and a Windsor & Eton rugby-themed beer (3). Oddly, the rear garden was in darkness despite it being clement. 7.5

Had been doing really well but my visit last week found odd service, a lifeless Loddon ('a problem with the gas'), halves served in unmarked glasses and a fairly perfunctory feel. Hmm. Rated 6

Superb pint of West Berks in here the other day, which was available alongside two other LocAle guests from Vale/Loddon, two from GK and a house beer of unknown (but most likely GK) provenance. Also finally discovered the decent sized rear garden. Now easily Wokingham's best pub though there ain't much competition these days. Rated 8

New licensees here and the pub has been designated by Greene King as a ‘local heros’ pub where local ales can be sold alongside the GK froth. Six pumps here with Ascot Alley Cat, Wild Weather Little Wind, Binghams Brickworks and the three GK brews. My Wild Weather was in good form though on chatting to the barmaid it seems like only a select few of the staff know how to look after the beer which does raise a bit of concern I suppose; what happens if there’s a quality issue on their night off? Anyway, the interior has had a sympathetic makeover - varnished board flooring and a general smartening up. Apparently there is a garden to the rear though I’ve never noticed any door leading to it. Best pub of yesterday’s crawl by some distance and looks to be well-worth a stop if standards are held high. Rated 7

Has certainly improved over the last couple of years - there's now a wider range of GK ale (plus a guest) served well (if a little cold) and the inside of this small pub has been re-jigged to maximise space and make it cosy. I was happy to read the provided Sunday papers with a pint on the weekend just gone. A worthwhile stop in Wokingham - it has benefited from the smoking ban. Rated 7

A bit pokey, a bit smoky. Decent service and the beer was good (if expensive). Not the best pub in town but not the worst either. Rated 6

Traditional Greene King pub not too far from the railway station. The interior is dark and cosy, but apart from a handful of drinkers congregated at the bar, most were outside either at the front or in a garden at the rear. We too decided to head out back after ordering.

The landlady apologised for the reduced range, which was due to the after effects of Covid and the continued failure of business to hit pre-Plague levels.

Regular ales are the house Queen's Head Bitter, Greene King Abbot & Stardust English Bitter. The guest was Loddon Ferryman's Gold.

A nice pub with plenty of character.
