The Station Inn / Y Stesh in Porthmadog
Still fairly basic but has had a greyification and a lot of the old knick-knacks have gone. Three pumps with just Purple Moose Eryri which, whilst in ostensibly good condition, had a fault somewhere as it tasted sweetcorny (NBSS 1.5). The perfunctory service didn’t help matters. Been well-overtaken by other pubs in town and it only really ticks a box for a swift one before the proverbial last chopper out of Saigon (which is how it feels here with one train every two hours!). Astonishingly, WhatPub says the place was taken over Purple Moose in early 2023! They need to get a grip.
November 2011
A timewarp station buffet, which has the vibe of a 1970’s scout hut. Nonetheless there were two ales on the go (Purple Moose and Exmoor Gold) which were both in good nick and pretty cheap. The clientèle were a mixture of Welsh-speaking locals and tourists waiting for the train (the pub has a door that opens out onto the south bound line). Staff were efficient and relatively friendly for North Wales. Retro chart music and Premier League football on big screens were the order of the day, along with cheap and fairly cheerful pies. Worth stopping in for a swift one before your train. Rated 6.5
