Before this visit I'd only been to two pubs in Durham, several years ago, and this was my 14th in one day. It opened in 2015, as my notes made at the time say, so wasn't open when I was in Durham before, and its proximity to the station had made it a shoo-in for last pub of the day. This is a micropub, with the beers dispensed through a hatch on the door of the stillage area where the beers and ciders are kept. Four ales and four ciders, as the pump clips on rails either side of the hatch made clear. The owner was having a beer himself after serving me, though he already had several customers in the pub. He was very friendly and welcoming, and there was a good atmosphere to the place. I would have appreciated the pub and beer more if they had been my first of the day, but it doesn't open until 4pm midweek (closed Monday, 2pm Friday). My notes, despite how many beers I'd drunk, can be read to the extent I know that my half of Hops & Dots Kanye Best ESB 5% was in very good condition.

Update review:

Having completed all of the 15 new pubs I'd set out to do in Durham and its surroundings, I just had to make a return visit to the Station House. This visit was every much as good as my first.

Service is no longer table service, which is far more civilised. Regulars including the barman who'd earlier served me in the Victoria were congregated on the bench tables near the servery, whilst somewhere there was a group playing what appeared to be sea shanties.

I sat in a cosy area down a few steps, where I managed to grab a small table still within easy reach of the bar. Staff were just as friendly as on my last visit. They were keen to hear how I'd found each of the ciders I tried.

Ales on were Fyne Jarl, Hops & Dots Fat Fingers, Cullercoats Jack the Devil & Brewsmith Oatmeal Stout. Ciders were Oliver's Dabinett, Ross-on-Wye Dabinett & Bisquet, Ascension Champing at the Pit V2 & The Landlady's Famous Mulled Cider (seemingly also from Ross-on-Wye). Craft beers and ciders were Durham Helles, Two by Two Citra Pale & Nightingale Wild Disco.

I still rate this as the best pub in Durham and will undoubtedly return again when I'm next in this excellent city for drinkers.

Original review: 4/8/20:

I seem to remember seeing this pub on my last visit to Durham in February, 2017. Whilst I visited the Bridge Hotel opposite, the Station House was not on my hitlist. This time it was and it turned out to be the highlight of my long weekend in Cumbria and Durham.

This micropub has a couple of different areas. But I sat near the main cold room and was able to chat with the friendly owner and staff.

There are 3 real ales, which were Cullercoats Sandpiper, Allendale Pennine Pale & Durham Black Bishop. However, the highlight for me was the cider and perry selection. All were on the dry side of medium. I had not had 2 of them before. Options were Ross-on-Wye Dry Oak Cask & 6 Pear Perry, Burrow Hill Alf & Alf, Kentish Pip Craftsman & Duckchicken Gigglejuice.

I enjoyed a good hour or so here, which significantly curtailed any further drinking options in the city, as the evening was wearing on. But my stay was well worth it.

Best pub I have visited in Durham City so far.

Splendid micro at the bottom of the station hill under the viaduct. One square room with a little area with two tables tucked away by the stairs to the toilet and more seats. No counter, service is from a hatch in the door of the cool room where the beer and cider are stored, all on gravity dispense.
