Well, I will never forget the fire :-)
8 Miles into day 2 of the inn way and we hit this place at 1pm.
Wet clothes off in the hallway and a nice chat with the chef/barmaid. Made to feel welcome.
Black sheep was fine. Other pint was Theaskstons. Couple of decent sandwiches.
Feel the previous reviews are a touch harsh. Surely the fact its from 1465 and contains the horn of Wensleydale makes it worth checking out.

I’m afraid to say that this is yet another of those pubs, too common in every region, that is trading on a reputation of what-forty or fifty years ago. It’s a lovely firm, solid building in a commanding position in an attractive , historic village in one of the most beautiful corners of God’s own county, yet it is unloved and sad. The public bar is stark, the other rooms dark; the lovely wooden panelling unsympathetically lit.
The choice of beer was pedestrian: my pint of Theakston’s Best was only marginally drinkable, Black Sheep B est was better, and I didn’t try the Websters-I thought that had gone with the Ark. Needless to say the food was pretty grim. The staff were cheerful in a rather medieval way, but the grumpy landlord-we remembered him from previous, if not so depressing visits, was lurking on the sidelines.
I can’t comment on the hotel side of the business, but what is needed is someone with flair and imagination to rescue this place.

Made to feel unwelcome as soon as we arrived; very dirty room, no alarm clock or radio, the mattress was just a whole load of springs; hotel understaffed, awful meal - so bad we had only starters. At breakfast the waitress said "Tell your Mrs she needs to move tables". There was no fruit juice. None of the pepper mills had any pepper in. We ordered scrambled egg with smoked salmon, which came as just scrambled egg on unbuttered toast; this was rectified by throwing some smoked salmon trimmings (the brown bits) on our plates. When we left the manager refused to tell me his name ("Mind your own business") and was extremely rude, aggressive and arrogant. Worst pub I've ever been to in my entire life!
