The Crown doesn't look very inspiring from the outside but inside is a splendid multi-roomed place with some lovely historical features, and with a superb range of beers on, as described in more detail below. The large outdoor drinking area feels more modern but is equally pleasant on a nice day. Well worth looking round the corner behind the tram stop.

A very woody interior, not particularly old inside just looking that way by design, the outside has more of the old inn in look. Multi roomed in the woody style. Six pulls on the counter however due to plague the beers are served outside from a small wooden extension, while a marquee in the garden houses a few locals. Odd mix of furniture as is normal for these slightly pretentious places. Old photos, books and random rustic tools as decor. The plague procedures are well thought out but the service can be a bit slow and I got served with an horribly scratched glass - it was dated 2012. Signage listed Brewsters Hophead(!), Oakham Citra, Blue Monkey Infinity, Dancing Duck Nice Weather, and Everards Tiger as regulars with three rotating guests, one of which was Acorn Old Moor Porter. Excellent quality beer shame about the other minor shortfalls but the barman was attentive enough for table service to work.

I didn't think this looked very promising as I approached it thinking it looked like a suburban barn. It's the exact opposite in fact. I went straight into the tiny narrow bar area on the right and stayed there only discovering before I left that it is a maze of different rooms and areas. It's all been well described below.
Although not all fourteen beers were on there must have been a dozen so I will just mention that the house Ashover Crown Amber & Pale were under three quid while the two I tried Wild Beer Millionaire and Salopian Lemon Dream were £3.50. Both of these were excellent. Other beers included Bass, Nottingham, Everards, Squawk, Whim and Kelham Island.
I thought this was a superb pub and would gladly visit again when I will try and find a seat in the "confessional".
