A revisit as I was showing my sister and her bf the highlights of Blackpool. Discovered a stash of boardgames so we decided to session it in here. GBG-worthy pints of their Tangerine, Stout and Blonde, though the Wonky Donkey was well under-par. I like it here, the service is always good, as is the atmosphere.

Smallish bar at the base of the Stanley Hotel. A live music venue with a CAMRA slant – check-out the framed aged What's Brewing covers! Decor pleasingly alehouse in style - tatty dark varnish wood, brick, sodium style lighting. A good soundtrack was being played at a sensible volume. Ten pumps with nine cask on, five from their pet brewery (West Coast Rock) plus four others. My Tangerine Dream was pretty tidy (NBSS 3.5). Also some keg stuff on the back wall. A nice bustling atmosphere and I enjoyed my 30 minutes in here. Rated 8

Housed in the Stanley Arms it looks like any standard down market pub in Blackpool but it has an on-site brewery, serves a few guests and is GBG2023 listed. Apart from the rather nice counter it’s a fairly typical strip out/ makeover although some other original features remain but you have to look hard. Ten pulls one with Doom (thankfully off), one with Lilly’s cider, guests from Saltaire, Cross Bay and Bowland, the other five have a range from the on site West Coast Rock Brewery (not keen), a quad T-Bar and some solos are complimented by 10 craft keg taps on the back wall including tank beer I guess from themselves. It’s one space that’s been hacked about with a raised area at one side of the front door. There’s a machine and table football at the back and naturally continuous music. It runs a regulars loyalty scheme called beer buddies with 10 or 20% discounts, more on Tuesdays for their own beer.

Blue Scrumpy left this review about 1887 The Brew Room

A sign above this prominent street corner bar indicates that this was once the Stanley Arms Hotel. More recently, it was called the Blue Room. Now it is the 1887 The Brew Room and is home to the West Coast Rock Brewery.

The bar staff in here were probably the friendliest we came across in Blackpool. Maybe some of the other bars have to put up with a constant stream of tourists and holidaymakers. This one is a little off the beaten track and therefore will attract more locals.

West Coast Rock beers on handpull were Oyston Stout, Tangerine Dream & Wonky Donkey. Guests were York Guzzler, Oakham Inferno, Goff's White Knight & Fyne Ales Avalanche. A boxed cider (Rosie's Pig) could be found at the end of the bar nearest the entrance, whilst there are also a number of taps for craft beers on the back wall of the bar. Offerings were Wild Beer Millionaire, Salt Huckaback, Lervig House Party & Pilot Mocchachino Stout.

We enquired about a CAMRA discount and the barman went one step further and gave us some kind of employee discount! In all honesty, I wouldn't have been happy paying any more than the £1 my half of Oyston Stout cost. Perhaps the sour taste was the blueberries (it was supposed to contain) coming through, but I don't think so. I suspect the recent warm weather we'd had was the reason for the poor condition. My fellow drinkers ordered a different cask ale, but agreed that the quality simply wasn't there.

Otherwise, I quite liked the atmosphere in here. It felt much more like a local alehouse than most of Blackpool's pubs. If they could get the real ales right, it could be one of Blackpool's best pubs.
