Update: This is a former Mad O'Rouke's and has been taken over a few times since. It now owns the former Woody's Bar as well. It is still the open plan, roughly L-shaped room, which is in the general mixed plain wall and wallpaper decor. Old photos adorn. There are TVs that were showing motor racing and they do food (not eaten here). Soft music played in the background. Service was fine and the clienele very mixed. 4 Pulls: Sharp's Doombar, Sea Fury and Atlantic and a fairly bland but at least well kept enough Robinson's Dizzy Blonde. Happy enough to visit once in a while.

Sep 2009: A quite plain looking detached cream rendered pub, with beer patio.

The inside is open plan, around the bar and down a long room with a stage at the end; where a rock band were going through their sound checks. The interior is modern, which of course means i wont like it; lots will and it was well attended by a mixed clientele. The decor seems to have each wall of a different colour (green, red, orangey, browny, white, with wood floor and arty pictures. There was a pool table - not used when a band is on. Service was very friendly. The wood panel bar gave a little feeling that all tasteful wasnt lost!

Beer; tap stuff, without MILd and Reverend James and Spekky Hen on handpull. The James was so-so.

A little too modern for me, so i wont make a habit of coming here, but it was popular and the band seemed fine from listening to their warm up - good venue for music

Slightly tucked away off the main street but I was quite impressed to find a good and proper pub, nicely furnished and well-kept. There are several areas around the bar, opening out backwards to a function room at the rear. Food is available all day, with a separate kitchen counter and tables set out but not intrusively to drinkers. Outside the front has been turned into a patio area with the car park remaining at the back. Beers were still the three from Sharp's, with Bombardier on as the guest. The sampled Sea Fury was in top condition (Cask Marque accreditation). It shows what can be done with a back street pub.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Hen House

Fairly anonymous chain pub / restaurant, but which chain? No branding in sight, so perhaps that doesn't really matter... Anyway, this large pub is set back from a town centre side road by some distance, with both a car park and patio beer garden fitted in. The interior has been opened-out at some stage and refurbished in a light semi-modern style. Thankfully, all four handpumps were in operation, dispensing three Sharp's beers - Doom Bar, Atlantic and Sea Fury (£1.75, half) - plus Robinson's Dizzy Blonde. NB - Quiz night underway when I visited on a Wednesday evening.
