The Three Crowns was my favourite pub in Chippenham. Sitting near a busy roundabout on the A4 and within an area of housing, it looks quite unassuming from the outside.

There are a couple of rooms, only one of which was occupied when I arrived. 5 other customers were present, along with what I guessed might be the landlady sat at the bar.

As previous reviews have said, the key attraction here is the real ale range. All 7 handpulls were clipped, with a couple of them reserved for dark beers, which I always appreciate. The full selection yesterday was Clearwater Mariners, Arbor Rocketman & Blue Sky Drinking, Hop Union Summer Pale, Glastonbury Lady of the Lake, Gloucester Dockside Dark & Blue Bee Vanilla Stout. Whilst I was eager to order the stout, I was instead drawn to a list of 3 ciders on a small blackboard at the end of the bar - Heck's Farmhouse Cider, Rutts Lane Rutts Special Reserve & Iford Windfall.

My cider was fetched from the cellar. It was certainly at the dry end of the scale, but being kept cold, it was in good condition. With more pubs to visit, I didn't get chance to try the ales ultimately. But if ever back in Chippenham, this is the pub I would head to first.

I don't believe they offer a CAMRA discount anymore. Snacks (pork pies and rolls) were advertised behind the bar. Sitting at the bar, I was interested to listen to conversation about hunting and game preparation which managed to last for the entirety of my visit.

This is certainly a well worn kind of pub. I can't comment on the quality of the real ale from this visit alone, but the range was certainly good and the real cider quality was fine.

Well I said I’d give it another go didn’t I? Just as I remembered on entering, a plain bar with wood floor, mint green and white trim and a residual smell of damp. The illuminated dart board is new. Seven pumps with five ales on. My Twisted Rider was a bit flabby (NBSS 2.5) served in a glass that should have gone in the skip years ago - scummed and pitted. Told me all I needed to know – I was right the first time. It's really not that good. One of those ‘gets in the GBG because of the amount of pumps’ places.

July 2016
Slightly battered local pub on a junction which is the darling of the local CAMRA branch. Old fashioned with two rooms either side of the central bar. Pea green and white trim (hmmm). Community-oriented, there was a well-advertised list of events, from football to quizzes to cheese nights. Time to get stuck into the ale – seven were on (also a CAMRA discount actively promoted) and I plumped for XT black. However the resultant beer was vinegar so I wearily trod back over to the bar and said so. The reaction was amusing “I told (owner) to take that off ages ago, it’s been on for almost a month!”. Now, whilst I initially found this hard to believe, I did say “maybe he’s had a few barrels of it?”. “Nope, definitely just the one” she replied. Okaayyy. Anyway she took the XT with a triumphant flourish. This left a choice of Prescott, Gyle 59, Plain Sheep Dip, Dizzy Dick, Animal (XT) Grizzly and Cotswold Spring OSM MILD. Decided to play it safe and go for the mild which Desmond was on and it was in decent condition. Also noted four ciders plus, in a highly unusual move, mead. Didn’t see any mention of the bar snacks (rolls/pies/scotch eggs) mentioned elsewhere. Pretty quiet for a late Saturday afternoon and I have to admit I didn’t really take to the place. Perhaps I was unlucky? Desmond really liked it though but then again he didn’t have to take his first beer back. I guess I’d give it another go – the praise elsewhere is effusive. Rated 6

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Three Crowns

Excellent real ale and cider pub, looking fairly unremarkable and a distance out from the town centre, but well worth the walk. Retaining a twin-bar layout (although only one was in use when I visited), all is pleasingly traditional within, and the barman was very good company for a chat. Seven handpumps offering a wide variety of styles and strengths (up to 9% in one case), and the Animal Brewing Oystercatcher stout was excellent. Only sorry that I couldn't stay longer before heading back for the station.
