Hidden away down the back streets of Balsall Heath, The Old Moseley Arms is a cracking old two bar pub with a well preserved interior that is well worth some investigation. A front porch gives you the option of turning left into the Public Bar or right into the Smoke Room. The latter is a nicely carpeted room with sturdy looking settles around the perimeter, pleasant two-thirds height wood panelled walls and some conservative wallpapered uppers. Walls are decorated with various bits of crockery, old pictures and there is a nice brick fireplace to one side. The room is served by a nice bar to the left with a smart counter and possibly modern bar back. The same servery runs through to the Public Bar as well, but here the bar is more impressive thanks to its curved, sloping panelled counter, attractive glass shelf supported by a row of slim pillars and simple bar back. This room is also carpeted and has similar chunky settles around the three remaining walls supplemented by low stools. There is a nice tiled fireplace to the left with a grand mirror above and a large, blown-up front page of the New York Times from the day of the Titanic's sinking dominates one wall whilst a photo montage covers much of another. A large screen to the rear was showing live football and there was a second screen midway into the room displaying a load of promotional material for the pub, including a list of ales that would be coming on soon. A corridor to the rear leads to a back room with similar carpeting and wood panelling, button backed banquette seating and another pleasant fireplace and beyond this there is access to a decent, partly sheltered, patio garden.
The pub has won a number of local CAMRA awards in recent years and there was a good selection of ales available on this visit including Wye Valley HPA and Butty Bach, Oakham Green Devil IPA, Enville Ale and Church End Cuthbert's, with more possibly available in the other bar - I forgot to look. My pint of Cuthbert's was in good nick although not a particularly pleasant beer and it was served to me by a very polite and welcoming barman. The pub has an extensive Indian menu which I spent ages perusing whilst cursing my decision to have a large full English that morning. Most of the customers around me ordered various dishes from the menu, all of which looked and smelt fantastic, but I regrettably had to go without.
This is a cracking pub that is well worth making the short bus ride from Birmingham City Centre to find. The pub has a great interior which is worth some investigation alone, but factor in the good beer and food options and you're onto a real winner. I really enjoyed this place and ended up spending much more time in here than I'd anticipated and would love to pop back again to try some of their curry.

A clean and friendly genuine traditional pub that won Birmingham CAMRA pub of the year 2013 and 2014.The place was tidy with open fires and a good selection of cask beers.Liked this one if ever in the area again will revisit.

Excellent old Victorian back street boozer, selling a decent pint of Butty Bach. A real oasis in this part of the world, due to the high percentage of non drinking locals. The place was rammed on a cold April afternoon and the chance for a game of cards and a bite to eat were welcome. As Gill Smith says, easily reach by the 50 bus, get off at Homer street.
