a very smart and comfortable Sam Smiths, at least in the cellar bar. Upstairs was closed off today. Food menus on all tables and unusually for Sam’s the meals actually looked edible. Decent OBB served by friendly foreign barmaid - would definitely visit again. Other reviews seem harsh, or it has improved dramatically- I found it hard to leave and it felt very tranquil in the tourist chaos of Oxford centre.

Almost dead on a Thursday evening. The refit has smartened things up a little in the lower bar. Entertainment provided by the barman who was very knowledgeable about Humph and his ways and on guard for a flying visit from the area manager (a mini-Humph) who did duly arrive, point at a few things, and then disappear. The fact there were next to no customers did not apparently concern him. OBB still at the bar (NBSS 2) and the Taddy lager was a bit musty. Continually flatters to deceive.

A Sam Smiths outlet in a pretty building, apparently converted into a pub in late 1980’s. Downstairs to a surprisingly well-lit and well maintained little bar, though not much atmosphere. Low ceiling, varnished wood furniture and attractive dark green tiling pretty much covers the décor angle. No OBB ale, so settled for a half of keg extra stout (£1.50) in a less than sparking glass. Meant to see how well the fridge was stocked but forgot. The upstairs lounge bar was closed on my visit but I’m informed it’s an ornate room. Simple food menu at Wetherspoons prices, the people next to me looked like their nachos and dips had been ram-raided from a cash and carry. I’d look in again to try and catch the upstairs but as a simple cellar bar it’s a bit ‘so what’ in a city full of great boozers. Rated 5

In the mid-‘90s I used to come here quite a lot, mainly because it was affordable for students. My ex-girlfriend and I would occupy a nook in the basement bar where once a week they’d hold a fun film quiz; quite a long time has passed since I was last in here.
A return the other night, to what was a pizza restaurant until 1987. It was also a first in the rather small upstairs bar which looks a bit like something you’d find in a railway station, with lots of russet wood, conventional furniture, some mirrors, large fluted columns and an ornately painted ceiling. Old Brewery Bitter was on cask and typically cheap at £3.00 a pint. However, it was a bit off. What also attracted my attention was the rather run-down state of the place. One bench seat had a serious patch of its pus-coloured vinyl missing, looking like it had been mauled by a dog. The pub is carpeted but the section under our table was virtually black with filth and a bit sticky. The lavs were a tad downmarket too and in need of remedial work. This may all go to explain why the pub was near dead despite the abundance of life in neighbouring hostelries.
The Sage of Tadcaster is generally regarded as running a tight ship when it comes to managing his pubs, but this seems to have fallen through the net. I’m not a great fan of the brand, no longer live in Oxford and as there’s far better locally, I wouldn’t return.
