Interesting back street pub just off the Cowley Road. Whatever you do, dont drive these streets. You'll find yourself impaled on a wooden spike in the middle of the road or if you a more lucky, embedded into a flower planter.

When will Sat Navs keep up with the town planners?

The selling point is certainly the lovely beer garden. Wonderful. My son's local and he has waxed lyrical about the quality of the TT Landlord. Alas, not on today.

I think there was only one Cask on, but with the high temperatures, I went safe Japanese Keg Kirin.

Interesting little place, I would be happy to return.

The Star is a small backstreet boozer that was busy during a recent Thursday evening visit. Unlike most of the other pubs in the area a lot of the punters weren’t students, which was nice. The bar on the right-hand wall supports premium and craft keg and I spotted three hand pumps. Oakham’s Citra, Tiny Rebel’s Cwtch and Titanic’s Plum Porter were available, with the latter being on top form. The very friendly barman informed me that they had some Reserve, but I declined due to being mid-crawl. Old beer clips along the ceiling beams suggest a regular and changing cask range. This was my favourite pub of the day.

I came here once before, getting on for 20 years ago and was followed around by a raven-haired vamp in a red dress, much to the chagrin of my ex-girlfriend. The Lady in Red wasn't in here the other night (she's probably now a grandmother) but from recollection, little has changed since my last visit and indeed that of Quinno just three-and-a-half years ago.
This is a Heineken Star-branded outlet, so no surprises that they've hijacked the sign as the company logo. This is a bare boarded pub, the unattractive bare brick is still there as is the 'Thomas the Tank Engine' colour scheme, though decidedly worn. Illumination comes mainly from sconce lights, which display an interior severely lacking in décor, save for the unattractive games machine to the rear. Music played at a muted level and the absence of TVs was a welcome sign.
Ales: Animal Brewery's Heron, Box Steam Brewery's Tunnel Vision and XT's 3 at £1.90 a half (in keeping with the area) and a welcome tipple.
If this were my local with nothing else around I wouldn't mind, but there's better to be had not far from here. It also gets packed with students come term time. In short, worth a visit if in the area.
