The Mechanics Arms is now sadly the very last pub that remains in St Ann’s. Located a couple of minutes’ walk in backstreets just down from the busy main Mansfield road the pub is nestled at the side of Alfred Street North. This is a long standing Irish pub with Irish Flags and some memorabilia scattered around. The outside is whitewashed and a very tatty manner and has signs of years of neglects as a lot of the outside is discolored and looks to be falling to bits. The Inside is not much better with a smallish bar running along the middle of the room with two opened up rooms at each side/ the room to the left has a pool table and a large TV while the room the right is manure like a lounge and has the majority of the tables and chairs. The decor is extremely dated and the fixtures and fittings are all dropping to bits and are either super old or super warn. Only a few were in on my Thursday evening visit and there were just a few Irish men drinking bottles of Budweiser and laying pool . there is no real ale and no hand pulls so I’m not sure why a recent update on whatpub lists them as having two. Just a very boring keg range presented itself so with lack of any other options I had a respectable pint of Guinness at £3.40 which is about the going rate now poured by an extremely uninterested young lad behind the bar (Not that I blame him working in here). We supped up and left but was given a pleasant send off by who I presume was the boy’s father before leaving as he had just arrived. Rumors are swirling that this pubs days could be numbered as there has been talk of it being sold which I think is a shame. Although not a great pub it is the very last pub remaining and I would be a great shame to see it go. I won’t be back but I hope it can sort something out.

The Mechanics is a small pub that is just off mansfield road but is in the St Anns area.
This is one of only two pubs that i know of that survived the St Anns slum clearences in the late 60s, over 60 pubs were lost in St Anns during this period.
Once inside this pub has got a smallish bar that is on different levels, when i first went in here it was a Davenports tied house and there was Davenports bitter and mild on the bar the bitter was a decent drink.
This pub is still open and it is a true survivor as most of the pubs built in the new redeveloped area have now closed or been demolished.
