As mentioned in the previous review, most of the village has been done up including the pub, however it does now seem to have settled down a bit. The interior is highly modernised in shades of light grey with furnishings that are more city than country and there is a huge concentration on food, but they are still very welcoming to drinkers. Ales on at time of visit were the house Lucker Amber (brewed by Alnwick and I don't know how different it is to their usual Amber), Alnwick Hotspur and TT Landlord.

It seems like some leisure development company has taken over the whole village, as the pub, the school opposite and several other buildings appear to be in the same ownership. There's a new development of flats with a convenience store, and not much left of the old village. We'd done about half of our cycle ride between Alnwick and Berwick via Alnmouth and Low Newton by the Sea, so decided to stop for a quick drink when we saw that the pub was unexpectedly open. There were three hand pumps on the very modern bar, but only one of the three local ales was on - and on pouring, it turned out that it was off. The people running the pub hurried to change it for a new barrel, but then didn't pull through enough at first, and all in all it took about 10 minutes to get served. Was the beer, Alnwick St Hilda's 4.5%, worth the wait? Well, it was ok but nothing special would be my rather grudging verdit. We had plenty of time to look around at the very odd way the place has been decorated. There are paintings, seemingly originals, of animals in conjunction with alcohol: very disturbing. (Perhaps inspired by the old Guinness adverts with the ostrich having swallowed a beer glass, but taken even further to extremes.) And light fittings made of (I hope plastic copies of) antlers; if not plastic, perhaps even more disturbing. Everything is very smart and new, but just a little off-kilter.
