Until 1985 this was a pub called The Princess Alexandra - an old Courage sign bracket can still be seen.

Despite having lived for years just around the corner from this place, I've never been inclined to visit - on face value it looked a little too fashionable for me; the immediate crowd doesn't appeal. Noting it the other day as almost empty, I threw caution to the wind and gave it a go and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Little remains of this former pub - there are some wood and glass screens and partitions, but I don't know if they are original; there's a very welcome real coal fire to the left wall. The central bar area is very small indeed and illumination comes courtesy of halogen downlighters and there are modern prints in frames to the walls, one of which is a pic of Bill Clinton who popped in here. A TV was spotted but thankfully it was off; muted music played over the stereo. There's a leafy 'tropical' dining conservatory to the rear with some raised nooks and palms, some of which are over 35 years old. The floor is tiled and seating is in the form of plywood settles and tables on four-legged metal poles on a raised dais with corduroy upholstery. Some chairs are high-backed wicker; each table sports a candle in a bottle. This may sound a bit like the reinvention of a pub circa 1970, and I'll bet it's certainly of quite some vintage, but it seems some effort has gone into this reinterpretation - I wouldn't be surprised if it had been designed by the likes of Terence Conran.
The bar staff were friendly (this is a family-run pub) and on offer aside from premium lagers were Harvey's Sussex Best (£3.40 a pint) and Purity's Mad Goose at £4.00 a pint, which is cheap for the area; both were well served - I was also given a top-up without asking.
I really quite liked this pub and will probably come again at quieter times, but the place could do with a broader choice of ales.

Internet pub, sells real ale London Pride & Tea,(not sure who makes that). Nice conservatory at the back with a jungle feel. Famous visitor Bill Clinton.
