Another classic old pub externally which has been modernised inside into an upmarket bar/kitchen/restaurant effort. A somewhat restrained atmosphere although it still has something of a pubby feel in the front part. I don't know what the Napoleonic connection is but there is one wall of portraits of the same and his buddies. Just TT Landlord on pump but in drinkable order.

This pub, which geographically is my second closest local, has recently been refurbished with the addition of some seemingly rather incongruous Art Deco ceiling lamps and Art Deco semi-circular wall seating booths. However, they immediately seem less incongruous when you spot the very fine Art Deco parquetry wall panelling to the dining area which is period and was uncovered during the aforementioned refurbishment; the bar top is silver metal, possibly pewter and the bare brick is now a thing of the past.
The rear of the pub - roughly two-fifths - is devoted to gastro dining, but otherwise the pub is fairly spacious, open in plan with slender metal columns with a couple of tall circular central tables with stools, some semi-circular velvet banquettes and a couple of tall modern pews; lavatories are satisfactory rather than goood. Given the name, it's no surprise that it's very popular with the local French crowd, though this pub's original name was The Artesian.
Naturally there's a selection of premium lagers but on the ale front, the beers, which typically number about four on cask, with GK IPA as standard thereafter GK's attempts at a real beer in the form of Yardbird then usually one or two from the likes of Sambrook's, Truman's or Twickenham. Quality is consistently below average, with ales all tasting somewhat musty which is probably the result of poor line hygiene - prices are quite steep too.
Service is generally good, providing the staff aren't having to waste everyone's time mixing cocktails; this pub is fairly quiet during the week but is rammed on Fridays and Saturdays. This place is worth a visit but really needs to clean its lines to warrant repeated custom.
