Ian Mapp left this review about The Porch House

Another claimant to the oldest pub in England. Mainly setup for dining - both inside - and the four tables out the front.

Immaculate inside - as you would expect. Paying a premium for the drinks - with one real ale on (a Brakspear) and Camden Hells at about the price you would expect to pay where it is brewed. Worth a visit to soak up the history.

Will Larter left this review about Eagle & Child (Royalist Hotel)

This was once obviously a separate pub but is now incorporated into the Royalist Hotel, by means of a connecting door between the smaller bar and the hotel reception lobby. The bar has serveries in two rooms separated by a substantial wall, making it hard for the staff to determine who'd been waiting longest.

There were two hand pumps with Dunscar Bridge pump clips, though one was turned round and the other had Steeplejack, a modern blonde and hoppy ale. This was served to me with an enormous loose head, so that my half pint glass was barely three-quarters full. I had to ask for a top-up before the bartender disappeared to the other counter. The beer was priced at £3.38 a pint, with the half being rounded up to £1.75 - the difference probably accounts for the extra time spent topping up short measures.

The décor was plain: bare white walls with a couple of very small pictures, exposed stonework and beams with adze marks; stone floors, scrubbed wooden tables and a variety of wooden chairs. This could have been quite a pleasant pub - perhaps it once was - but it's now quite clearly a hotel bar with no atmosphere (unless you count the piped music).

Blackthorn _ left this review about Eagle & Child (Royalist Hotel)

This review is for the Eagle & Child pub, which is connected to the Royalist Hotel. Just in case there is another bar in the hotel. It claims to be the oldest inn in the country, and whilst that may be the case the interior has obvioulsy had some makeovers and doesn't quite have the olde worlde charm that you would perhaps expect.
The conservatory area we dined in is definitely not that old! Food's pleasant enough, but they should perhaps concentrate a little more on substance over style.
Stowford Press cider on tap.
