Old Boots left this review about Luis Bar @ Fernandes

Newly renovated, it looks smaller to me now but the beer is excellent and there’s a wide choice from within the Ossett group plus one or two other breweries. Plenty of exposed brick and some iron columns, protected by cushions on the sharp corners. The old pub signs have been retained but moved to a less prominent position and the European beer adverts remain.

Excellent brewery tap. Situated down a side road just off a major roundabout this brewery tap is above the brewery. 11 handpulls with 4 from Fernandes and 2 Ossett and the rest guest beers. Definitely worth a visit.

The bar in this place is right at the top of the building in a single room that is a bit like an old barn. At least you don't have to go all the way back downstairs to get to the toilets! The floor is wooden and there are some old Home brewery pub signs along with other bric-a-brac. It wasn't that busy on my Saturday afternoon visit.
The bar has eleven hand pumps which had rwo unused, a cider, five Fernandes beers, Abbeydale Piracy, Revolutions Clash and Ossett Yorkshire Blonde. I had a couple of Fernandes Double Chinned IPA (£3.35) both of which were a bit warm, the first more so. Apart from that minor niggle they were fine.
This is clearly one of the destination ale venues in Wakefield. It's GBG 2018 listed.

As with Mr. Camra below, there are plenty of accurate descriptions here so I'll limit myself to listing the ales and noting that the pub signs which decorate the walls work especially well. I was very taken with the large Tally-Ho sign.
Inevitably Fernandes dominate the beer list with the following: Folklore, 60 Shilling, Pekko and Black Voodoo. The guest list comprised: Ossett Yorkshire Gold, Wimbledon Common, Milestone Summer Lovin, Raw Edge IPA and Elland 1872 Porter.
The Pekko was excellent, in great condition and too good to be tempted elsewhere although a sip of Mr. Aleandhearty's Malt Shovel Mild, for which the Black Voodoo made way, was enough to convince me that it was one of the best milds, if not the best, I've tried.
A super boozer which will be very high on my list the next time I have the good fortune to be visiting Wakefield.

Multiple desriptions below save me the need to add to them. We only visited the top floor bar which I thought was very comfortable. 11 handpumps including a real cider. My pint was in excellent nick and was served quickly and efficiently by the bar staff. I'll be visiting here again next time I'm in Wakefield.

Ten ales and 1 cider on our visit, four of which were from Fernandes. We went for the Fernandes Cascade, Rat Brewery Sneaky Rat and Abbeydale Absolution. All of which were in tip top condition. The bar staff were friendly and helpful in supplying tasters. Our fellow drinkers in here were also friendly and chatty, so all in all we had a good old time in here and stayed longer than anticipated. Proper ale pub this one.

Easily missed unless you have the trusty PuG map, this is a calm oasis for the discerning drinker. The Beir Keller was closed on our Friday 5pm visit,so we carried on up the stairs to the first floor Real Ale Bar,with it's interesting decor and collection of pub signs. The vaulted ceiling with twin galleries at either end is a feature,as is the fireplace to the right of the bar.An eclectic rock track was playing at a sensible volume and the friendly barman was quick to offer tasters to aid ale choice. The ten real ale handpumps were offering two from owners Ossett (Citra and Blonde),Pied Bull Matador,Oldershaw Pioneer and Allgates Barley Brook as the rotating guests, with four from the home brewery Fernandes (my Good Night Vienna was in good form) and a single Fullers ,who have a supply agreement with Ossett,in the shape of Seafarers.A very decent selection to swing the bat at,with a handpumped cider on as well.
One of our party wanted to catch a World Cup match,so with a slightly heavy heart we pushed off after one pint.I will spend a lot longer in here on my next visit to this GBG stalwart. It's a must visit when in Wakefield.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Fernandes Brewery Tap

A bit hidden away in a side alley, but definitely one to seek out. Main upstairs bar has a pleasantly rustic feel, with a number of old pub signs providing some character. Ground-floor bierkeller closed when I visited briefly on a Friday lunchtime. Plenty of choice from a total of 11 handpumps, so I opted for halves of Wentworth Rock Spalt and Rum for Cover (from the in-house microbrewery) totalling £3.00. Very good.

This two floor bierkeller/ale house is a bit of a challenge to find if heading from the town centre, although it is just a short walk from Kirkgate station. On our Sunday evening visit, the ground floor bierkeller was shut, so we ventured upstairs into the main bar, with its fine dark wood and exposed brick interior and impressive vaulted ceiling. The room has been broken up somewhat with some large booth-like sections filled with comfortable bench and standard chair seating, whilst a number of barrels provide somewhere for vertical drinkers to rest their pint. The whole room has been decorated by a great number of full size pub signs, which look fantastic and act as forms of partitioning in places.
The pub is, as the name suggests, the tap for the Fernandes Brewery - a subsidiary of Ossett - and accordingly they were well represented on the satisfyingly long row of hand pumps, with Fernandes Ghost of Louis, Challenger, Taverners Bitter and Avanother, Ossett Brigantes and Pale Gold, Gales HSB, Empire Moonraker Mild and Elland Mr Sun to choose from. I sampled the Ghost of Louis and Moonraker Mild, both of which were well kept and very enjoyable. A decent looking bottled beer selection was available as well, although I don't recall seeing any beer menus, so perhaps it's not that extensive.
I really liked the look and feel of this place and got the impression that it's the sort of pub where most visitors would quickly be made to feel welcome. The highlight of a good day drinking around Wakefield and one that I would gladly revisit at the next opportunity.

Revisited last week, and happy to report that little appears to have changed; the ale is still good and plentiful, staff are helpful and it's a great place to settle in for a session. Wakefield's best.

August 2009
A bierkeller-style effort based over two floors which is also a brewpub - home to the Fernandes brewery. It's not an obvious place to find but persevere and you shall be rewarded. The first floor is foreign beer; 12 on draught - though only open on busy nights - whilst the upper floor up an unassuming wooden staircase is the ale with some good Belgian bottles in the fridge and fruit wines too. There's a selection of 8 ales mainly drawn from the Fernandes brewery and Ossett, who have recently taken the place over, with a couple of guests plus a cider. The beer was excellent quality (the Nelson's IPA was a pint of grapefruity goodness and Hail to the Tsar was a quality brew). CAMRA awards everywhere, no surprise really. Interior-wise, it's wood panelling, exposed beams and a roof structure that looks like some sort of old mill (though don't quote me on that), with plenty of comfy seats to settle down and enjoy a good long session (trust me, they do work in here). The barman looked as rough as a hungover docker but was good at his job. I didn't spot a TV, so it looks like a nice place to meet up with friends for a quiet chat.

A cracker and well-worth a journey from the Leeds-Sheffield area to try. Even the thought of having to return to Kirkgate BR (officially the worst station in Britain, what a hole) to get the train back seemed not so bad after a few in here...! Score 9
