A nondescript roadhouse which endured a refurbishment about twenty years ago. Time has not healed, and it feels depressingly suburban inside. Too much emphasis on food to make it feel comfortable, with all normal tables reserved at 4pm despite a paucity of punters. Drinkers are meant to perch on the stupid high stools, unhelpful if you're in a wheelchair.

The Hooky bitter was fine, though £4 a pint is ambitious for such a humdrum location.

If you're passing this way the Folly is orders of magnitude better.

Very much an eating house now, with a peculiar single price menu structure which didn'[t really suit us as only wanted a quick bite. Even worse, they couldn't vary the menu options (eg no cheese) as apparently pre-prepared. Range of Hook Norton beers which were drinkable, but not in the finest condition. A bit disappointing - could be much better.

Full range of Hook Norton on - I went for a Hooky, which was cloudy but tasted OK.

We were there at Sunday Lunchtime. Although they do offer the full menu, there are no light bites or sandwiches. This isn't a complaint - most places just do Sunday Lunch.

Everyone there was dining.

ORIGINAL REVIEW Sept 2011.
A very friendly welcome awaits customers to this Hook Norton tied house. There is an open plan public bar which has more of a lounge feel ,but contains a pool table and darts board .There were three Hooky ales available and the condition of both the Old Hooky and the Bitter was good. There is a selection of bar snacks and pub grub available most sessions ,and the general atmosphere was relaxed with a good smattering of locals gathered around the bar.
There is a seperate restaurant with all tables set for dining ,but this was not operational on my lunchtime visit.
A shortish walk up from the Oxford Canal,I would return to this pub which doesn't have the quirky issues prevalent at the pubs on the dark side of the village.

UPDATE

Hook Norton has done a significant refurb here obliterating the pubbiness in exchange for a very corporate eating venue.Much more open plan than before with horrible slatted blinds in the windows, the loss of atmosphere is palpable.Probably fine as a place to eat but now offputting as a pub to drink in and a downgrade from me.

A Hook Norton Road side pub, which is how pubs should be, with the additional restaurant area.
There were a few locals holding up the bar enjoying the politics of the day, with us and a couple of others enjoying the food from a proper pub grub menu of scampi, cod, sausages, eggs, chicken and chips either as a large plated or a smaller version of a basket!! Haven’t seen that on offer since a kid!
It should be noted that food is served up until 8pm, (this could just be for weeknights)
The Landlord and Lady were welcoming and made sure all was good with beer and food.
It was great to see a choice of Hook Norton’s, Old Hooky, Hooky Bitter and Dark Hooky, all went down rather well, just wish we could have stayed longer.
This pub is worth the walk from the canal but it is along busy roads, so after dark a good idea to have torches and fluorescent clothes on. You can reach it from Bridge 109 or 110 and it’s about 5 minutes from there, but the towpath isn’t very clever to moor up. We moored up before the Napton Junction after bridge 108 and it was about a 20 minute walk, using the road track alongside the canal.

The Kings Head is something of a roadhouse which has always provided a friendly welcome on my visits and is popular with the villagers of Napton.
The pub is split into a large lounge/bar and seperate dining room which I've never seen open.
Food is of the standard pub variety and my sandwich was fresh and decent value.
Beer is Hook Norton: Bitter, Old Hooky and Dark with all that we tried in good condition.
A reliable stop for a quick one.
