Situated on the roundabout of the Old Ford Road and Grove Road intersection this large three storey pub with its now bright purple lower exterior paint job stands out, especially at night when the lights from the pub and the upstairs restaurant act like a beacon for weary travellers traversing Victoria Park.
Inside its nothing you haven’t seen before from a posh food led Youngs pub. All wooden floors, comfortable seating and multiple areas in the pub section and liberal use of Farrow and Ball pastel colours in the restaurant above. Three hand pumps on the bar with the now very common line up of Youngs Ordinary, Special and St Austell Proper job, so two Youngs pubs visited on the day at the end of November and no Winter Warmer in sight. The Propper Job was fortunately a well kept pint in consolidation.
Not the type of pub for a decent ale session but if you are after food or visiting Victoria Park in summer then this is a good choice, especially if you can get a spot on the upstairs outside verandas with their excellent views across the park.

Good looking Victorian building opposite a gate leading to Victoria Park, this Youngs pub has had a hipster internal makeover. The entrance has a fine mosaic Crown Hotel inscribed on the floor, but the new layout has led to a modern wooden clad bar to the right, which is surrounded by bench seating with scattered cushions and more undressed wood making up the tables with more traditional wooden chairs.A large staircase leads to a first floor room with no doubt fine views over the park, but this was being used for a private function on my midweek visit.
Past the bar and a bookcase full of board games, the large space is full of mainly dining tables, some butcher block style other old wood and the doors here which would have opened into seperate rooms are largely non functional.Lighting is modern and the muzak was cool but uninspiring.
Three handpumps offering Youngs Ordinary and Special along with St Austell Proper Job (£5,good nick) which is a regular guest in Youngs houses these days.Keg selection was very mainstream and boring.Food is served throughout the day and my fishfinger sandwich was proper pieces of fish lightly battered, good granary bread, straw fries and salad which lived up to it's £9.50 price tag.
For the area this is a pricey pub and aimed squarely at the more affluent, better for a bite to eat rather than a major ale session.

Large pub with room off to the left and the bar opposite the door. Upstairs dining available. Three hand pumps of which Doombore was the strongest.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Crown

Imposing building located between one of the main entrances to Victoria Park and the Hertford Union Canal. Inside, it features a typical Geronimo Inns mix of furniture and decor in the semi-opened out bar and larger lounge. Signage indicates upstairs dining rooms too (not visited). Sharp's Coaster (£3.90) and Young's Special available from two of three handpumps (with an 'Ale be Back' notice in front of a Purity Mad Goose clip on the third).

Alan Winfield left this review about The Crown

The Crown is a very large looking victorian built pub that looks quite grand from the outside, but spoilt by being painted in horrible battleship grey, whoever thought it was a good idea to paint pubs in this colour should be dropped into a vat full of it.
Once inside there was a very large iregular shaped room that was divided into different areas, the room was bare boarded and the seating a mix of different types.
There were three real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Sharps Doom Bar which was a decent enough drink, the other beers were Youngs Special and Adnams Ghost Ship.
The pub was quite busy with the usuall types who frequent these pubs.
This pub was ok for a quick drink, but not really my sort of pub.

Little can be added to that below, though a selection of Twickenham Ales constitutes the real ale contingent along with premium lagers and cider. This is a very 'designed' pub for the stripey shirt and Ray Bans brigade and is rather incongruous in this traditionally down at heel area. I must admit that I quite liked it and would certainly pop in again if passing.

Rex Rattus left this review about The Crown

Standing diagonally opposite the “Crown Gate” to Victoria Park, this edifice of a Victorian pub rightly dominates the crossroads. Its glory is somewhat diminished these days, having been painted the battleship grey you see everywhere now. Inside it’s more shades of grey, plus sofas all over the place, as well as some hideous tall benches upholstered with fake animal skin patterned fabric coupled with tall butcher’s block style tables. Drinking areas were divided by shelving bearing an assortment of what some interior pub designer thinks looks good, such as books (fair enough), bowls containing some sort of pot pourri, and glass jars containing what looks like dry lemon slices, pine cones and other assorted debris. The original mosaic tiling for the Crown Hotel is still in the entranceway though.
There are some tables outside at the front on a small patio area, where I also saw an advertisement for hen parties and baby showers. I’m not sure why anyone would want to take their baby to a pub for a shower, but it takes all kinds I suppose. Or possibly it’s an attempt to foist another gimmicky American activity onto unwary Londoners. Anyway, they did have Doom Bar and Redemption Pale Ale. I had a half of the Redemption, at the very predictable £1.75. It tasted good though. I guess a lot of people must like these gutted Victorian pubs as there were a good number of customers in there on Saturday afternoon, but it’s not really my cup of tea.
