The Lime Kiln in Bristol
Smelly old place with an unsatisfying mish-mash of an interior and furniture. The new ‘whole wall’ mural looks like something out a children’s book. Been in and out of the GBG over the years - currently, it’s listed. Five cask on the go, my Small World Thunderbridge Stout was decent (NBSS 3.5) though the bar blockers were unwelcome. Worth having a look if you’re nearby for the cask+plus quality but it didn’t strike me as somewhere I’d want to do a session in, a slightly odd atmosphere. 6.5

A flying visit to this small, basic, boozer located round the back of the Council House. The front room is only just big enough to swing a cat and has a very ‘lived-in’ feel, verging on the knackered in places. Basic furnishings plus window perch, very intimate so you have to talk! Two ales on, St Austell Tribute and Proper Job – the Proper Job was in top form and it’s a shame I had to neck it. There were also some proper ciders too but didn’t note what they were. Staff were friendly. CAMRA discount on pints advertised on the large screen to the right of the bar which also flashed up other notices and events of note. Based on the beer quality, I’d be happy to do this one again. Rated 7

With the ATM gone, the most striking element of the interior is the raised approach and drinking area in front of the modernised bar; no longer do wheelchair uses have to undergo the indignity of being hauled up the stairs to use the loo, as there’s now an ingeniously installed lift. Otherwise, furniture is conventional, normal height or tall with some sofas. The colour scheme is now a shades of blue affair with white and a little bare brick with décor in the form of predictable quirky framed prints and potted palms, illuminated by à la mode light fittings; customers were locals, mixed in age and deep of pocket, all in good spirits, with raised voices to overcome the rather loud rock soundtrack.
The cask choice wasn’t up to much, especially for a Saturday, with an unused pump, one with a reversed clip then just Ghost Ship at an eye watering £3.20 a half and ok, nothing more.
This is quite a nice pub – certainly better than the neighbouring Althorpe – though the novelty of looking down from on high on fellow drinkers wouldn’t hold my attention forever, but the ale selection wasn’t up to much, likewise the quality. And then there’s the price.
