Multi-roomed gastropub owned by the same pubco as runs The James Figg further up the High Street, this hostelry being beyond the fair reaches of main drag. There's a nice 'snug' drinking area on entry dominated by a hige fireplace, but all other rooms set for dining, with two areas smaller and more intimate than the main dining area (top right from entry). Sharp's Doom Bar and locAle XT 3 on the stumps, the latter, for a fiver, was on good form (NBSS 3.5). Blackthorn's wine cellar with its wrought iron gate is still in situ which is a nice feature.

An attractive half-timbered pub with a thatched roof in the centre of this pleasant town, it is a mixture of old and new inside with a modern extension at the rear and a courtyard garden beyond.

The front part of the pub had a traditional olde worlde charm with a wonky beamed ceiling, plenty of chunky supporting timberwork, rough quarry tiles on the floor and a large fireplace to the left with deep red painted brickwork. A snug was off to the left, and a large wine “cellar” had been made in to something of a feature with a wrought iron gate. As mentioned the rear part was more contemporary, with a wood strip floor and cream paintwork in contrast to the deep red at the front. To the right was an area more geared up for dining, and although we didn’t inspect the menu, food clearly features prominently here with an A-board outside saying that they had won an accolade in the Observer 2014 good food awards.

Beers on tap were Timothy Taylor Landlord and Doom Bar, whilst the solitary cider was Aspall’s Suffolk.

Not a pub but an excellent restaurant even if it is a little pricey. They do specails mid week though for better value for money. And the Times promotions are excellent
