Cat & Mutton, E8

The Cat and Mutton is a corner pub that is situated at what i would call the top end of Broadway market. Once inside there is a single decent sized square shaped room with the bar facing,the room is bare boarded,there is a long bench seat down the left side with a long table,a few normal tables and chairs in the middle area,the right side had leather bench seating and some leather settees. There was one real ale on the bar which was Robinsons Trooper,this drink was ok but slightly too warm for my liking. The pub was empty when i arrived at about 11.40am,by the time i left just after 12 it was packed. There is nothing special about this pub,but it is a proper pub. Pub visited 4/10/2014

Apparently this pub was originally called The Cattle and Shoulder of Mutton. It’s at the end of Broadway Market and was predictably very busy with the market on the go at Saturday lunchtime. Clearly a classic pub, it sports the iconic polished granite pillars outside. Inside it’s nothing like the pub it once must have been. It’s bare-boarded, with the tables and chairs having very little room between them – indeed it all seemed very crowded and cramped in here, but that is probably partly due to being as busy as it was. The bar counter was unusual being very high off the ground, with the staff behind it looking down on you seemingly like the police sergeants in those old US TV shows. There was just the one real ale on – Deuchars IPA, which went off just as I ordered. I suspect that this is a much nicer pub when the market crowds aren’t present.
