Amazing old place (13th century, apparently), in a nice setting next the architecturally distinctive village church. Enter to a huge, almost baronial, main room with dark beams, thick stone whitewashed walls, a wood burner in a huge old inglenook, upright piano, brasses and dark wood furniture with a number of settles and pews. An unusual décor item are the wood carved hangings of the astrological signs. To the right of the bar is a separate function room with a jumbo table. Two ales on, a homebrew of uncertain origin and Shingle Bay Salcombe plus Ashridge Devon Blush cider. The Shingle was, unfortunately, below-par. Notably friendly barman who did well to put up with the odd inquisitorial ramblings of another customer who appeared to be a anorexic version of Uncle Monty. We ate here and were happy with the grub, and also being allowed to order off the fuller evening menu in the early afternoon as the kitchen was quiet. I thought this was an absolutely fantastic pub, just a shame that the beer wasn’t up to scratch otherwise this would be 9. I’d love to give this one a visit again simply for the interior and I recommend others to do likewise.

A fantastic traditional pub that holds a wonderful atmosphere, locally sourced food and real ales! The pub has recently changed hands by a family based in Dittisham and lots of people are talking about this hidden wonder. A place not to be missed!!
