Located just a short stroll across the river from the Totnes town centre, this is effectively the brewery tap for the Bridgetown Brewery located at the rear of the pub, although it’s clearly a traditional pub and the fact that it is a brewery tap was not at all obvious.

Internally it’s very traditional in terms of décor, with black beams on the low ceiling as well as wooden supporting pillars and a mixture of slate style tiling and sanded wooden boards on the floor. Exposed stone walling was down one side which had been whitewashed, whilst elsewhere was wood cladding in a deep salmon colour. Various old photographs of the locale were dotted around the walls, as well as brewery mirrors and such like, and a few old barometers and a picture or two of Albert Einstein from whom the pub takes it’s name. The front room is quite small, especially towards the rear where tables have been placed in what was at one time probably just a passageway. A further room at the rear was broadly similar in terms of style, but nonetheless seemed much cosier.

The menu offered a decent choice of “pub grub” style dishes, and my homemade lasagne in red wine served with salad and garlic flatbread was tasty enough although a little on the small side, whilst a slow cooked beef and Albert ale pie across the table was also pronounced very tasty but with a very runny sauce.

Beers on tap were all their own as might be expected and consisted of Albert Ale, Accolade and Brutus Mild. Ciders meanwhile were Hunt’s Bull Walloper, Inch's Rolling Apple, Andsome Bay and Rosie’s Pig Rhubarb, with the first two being dispensed directly from boxes racked up behind the bar. Overall, a pretty decent local’s pub, although it could definitely have done with being a few degrees warmer in there.

A little out of the immediate centre, over the water in Bridgetown. Interesting exterior with the upper having hung slates, unusual and also GI listed according to WhatPub. Swift one in here so I could get the last train back up the line to Reading without being stranded in a backwater. Straightforward local, a fairly comfy front room with darts on the go. 3x Bridgetown brewery ales, my Stout was ‘flat af’ according to my sparse notes (so let’s say NBSS 2) but I probably got unlucky, maybe barrel-end. ‘Proper boozer’ is about right.

The Albert has front and rear bars, each with three hand pumps. The front three were drawing options from the pub’s own Bridgetown Brewery and the three rear were drawing real ciders, including Hunts Bull Walloper at 7.2%, oooff! The wooden furniture is functional and there’s a dartboard with an oche across the front windows to the right. This is a proper boozer that’s well worth a visit.
