Update November 2022 - Thames Side brewery have been evicted by the venue and will reopen in other premises from 8 Dec 2022. The Lost Hop is presumed to be still trading.

18 August 2022
The new brewery and tap room of Thames Side, moved from their previous cramped premises the other side of the bridge. Now in a large beer hall of a place in a modern building, with a bar at one side, the brewing kit in the middle, and a kitchen and small stage at the other. Furnishing is mainly industrial-type tables, apart from a few booths and sofas, and there is a riverside balcony and patio at the front. A selection of their own beer range and guest craft and cider is available from half a dozen hand pumps and a wall of keg taps - beware that some of those named on the pump handles may actually be drawn from the taps, so ask first.

The Thames Side Brewery has now moved to much larger and more modern premises further along the riverbank and on the other side of Staines Bridge.

There seems to be both positives and negatives to the move. I actually quite liked the smaller premises they had before. The new place is large, open-plan and feels much more commercial. Although, it will obviously attract more drinkers from a wider cross-section of society. Quite a few were in, some bringing in their own takeaway food. A stage at the far end from the bar indicates that live music also makes an appearance.

We were met by quite a few bar staff. Although all seemed new to the job and didn't appear to know what they were doing. Handpulls on the bar carry all of the guest beers, along with a cider. The Thames Side cask beers are poured from the rear of the beer, where a craft beer selection can also be found. They come from the large casks to the side of the bar.

The full selection of cask was Thames Side White Swan, Black Swan, Heron Ale, Don't Fear The NEIPA & London Calling, Titanic Plum Porter & Vienna Lager, Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Milestone Raspberry Wheat Beer & Tiny Rebel Cwtch. Craft beers were Two Tribes Classic, Mariachi, Dream Factory, Power, Metroland & Metroland NYC, Windsor & Eton Shout, Tiny Rebel Wheat Beach, By The Horns Squeezer & Rooster's Hanging Gardens of Basildon. The cider on handpull was actually a perry - Mr Whitehead's Hampshire Perry, whilst Mr Whitehead's Plum Cider was also available on keg.

It's an excellent selection of ales and ciders that beats the George (the nearby Wetherspoon's) hands down. In fact, after our visit here, we walked into the George and straight back out again. Their ale range has deteriorated and they no longer stock real cider. Although, it's obviously cheaper and therefore busier in the current economic climate.

I tried the perry and the London Calling. Whilst both were in good condition, I really didn't take to the London Calling. I'd had most of their other beers at the Ascot Beer Festival the previous day and quite enjoyed those I'd had. So, I think it was just my choice of beer that was at fault. Although, you can never rate a beer until you've at least tried it!

Altogether, the Lost Hop is a valuable addition to the town and I would say it is easily the best that Staines has to offer.
