Crown Wharf is a massive barn of a place which, according to one of the many bar staff, is located on the old Joules Brewery site. The long central bar counter is split midway along by a sliding wall that separates the right-hand theatre side from the ‘German Beer Hall’ to the left. The full Joule’s range was available on keg and cask, I went for the Chocolate Corker which was decent. Whilst waiting for my pint I noted that there are booths opposite the bar counter along the front wall and one of the booth sides is a door that has all Joule’s pubs etched into it. Flag stones run throughout as well as wood paneling and glazed tiles. High tables, banquettes standard tables, take your pick. On the left-hand wall is a large fireplace that adds to the German beer hall vibe. The toilets are upstairs where some more rooms can be found. I thought these rooms had more of a Viking getaway feel and could imagine tribal meetings being held here, but I was quite pished. A traditional pub this isn’t, but I liked it and would return.

A new development of semi-traditional brick buildings with a canal-side patio, which has been well described by the previous reviewer. As well as the usual Joules shtik of reused or recreated pub fittings and ephemera, there is a nice touch where each of their pubs has contributed something of particular interest from their own establishment; the one that caught my eye was a Wem brewery plate from the White Lion in that small town (see photo). There are three sets of four hand pumps around the bar, with the four same beers on each, but it wasn't that busy when I was here and unfortunately this was reflected in the quality of the beer. My half of Joules Pale was a bit lacking in condition and struggled to reach NBSS 2.5 (whereas the same beer drunk in Wem a couple of weeks previously had been NBSS 4 in the same brewery's Castle Hotel).

Joules Brewery have spent £3M on this new build pub development at the Crown Wharf canalside site. They also constructed the shell of a 200 seater theatre with a local arts charity funding the internal fit out, which has now been completed.Using modern brick, the external is clearly a pastiche ,but in keeping with the industrial buildings in the area, most noteably the former Joules brewery next door ,last used as such when Joules beers were actually brewed in Stone. The modern day brewery has eschewed that tradition and now brews in Market Drayton ,leading to a much inferior product.
It's huge inside and is a shrine to the modern pub chain, with a vast amount of pub ephemera dotted all about.Entering from the metalled exterior terrace by the canal ,there is a vast vaulted ceiling space with a series of high tables, room for vertical drinking and a large wood burner. To the right is a section of seating booths ,each themed with a Joules pub name and associated photos and nic nacs.A small wood burner finishes off this section.
To the immediate left of the entrance is a seperate snug with canal view windows.Plush fitted and upholstered bench seating make this cosy yet smart. The kinked bar dominates the interior with several sets of 4 handpumps all pulling Joules unexceptional brews, namely on my visit Pure Blond,Pale,Slumbering Monk and Kolkata East India Pale Ale(5% but hop lite and malty, very much like all their ales, indestinct NBSS 2.5).
Opposite the bar there are three numbered seating booths with small doors, very discrete but handy for the bar.Beyond is an area with a baby grand piano which may be played by accomplished pianists,a set of traditional furniture, more canal views and posters advertising upcoming performances by Stone Revellers theatre group.Beyond here is the entrance to the theatre stalls, while on the first floor there is access to the balcony, the loos,a private room called The Boardroom with a magnificent trophy cabinet dividing wall ,stuffed with a huge collection of trophies and awards along with interesting artwork.
The overall affect is awe inspiring, all totally new but the rich use of wood everywhere and the fine detailing, including Robert Thompson carved mice,in magnificent.
I would say a must visit for the oppulance, shame about the beer.Buy a half and have a squint, then push off for better ale elsewhere in this fine drinking town.
