A basic, no-frills pub near to the Weston Playhouse as might be surmised from it’s name, although it’s not immediately adjacent to the theatre and as far as I’m aware has no particular affiliation with it.

It’s been spruced up externally due to some sort of grant from the council to improve the appearance of some of the city centre streets, and does indeed look quite inviting with it’s dark paintwork and large plate glass windows. Unfortunately though, that’s as far as it goes, and there has clearly been no attempt made to spruce up the interior. The flooring is rough wooden boards whilst the suspended ceiling tiles make it look more like an office or shop unit rather than a pub. A few strings of flags and festoon light bulbs were strung around. The walls were plain white plasterwork with some dark brown paint on the dado rails, and in a nod to it’s alleged theatrical connections there were various posters on the wall from the likes of Cannon & Ball, Bobby Davro and Jimmy Carr. A TV screen was showing the football although fortunately at quite a low volume, so this was not too intrusive, although having said that the pub was deathly quiet and some sort of background noise would have been welcome. There was also a projector and screen at the rear of the pub although this was not in use on our visit. More alarming was the setting up of various bits of PA equipment, and it transpired that an open mic night was shortly to commence. The whole atmosphere was abysmal, not helped by the wide-open door that meant we had to keep our coats on.

Unfortunately there were no real ales on tap, or in fact any ales at all come to that, although I did spot some bottles of London Pride. Ciders fared slightly better with Thatcher’s Gold being available on tap. Do be aware that opening hours appear somewhat erratic, I have tried to visit on countless occasions previously only to find them closed when they should be open.
