A new build pub on the main A38 just south of Bristol, this in on the site that was for many years a rather ropey nightclub known as the Town’s Talk. There is a hotel adjacent to it, and this no doubt does well serving customer’s of the nearby airport.

The pub is a good size and split across two floors, with the bar counter being, rather unusually, on the upper floor. Large glazed windows make the most of the outlook across the rolling countryside, and there are also outdoor terraces, although the noise from the road must detract from this somewhat. Downstairs they seem to have gone for a bit of a rustic chic look perhaps, and whilst it’s not a bad effort for a new pub, it did seem a little soulless, and the harsh acoustics made it seem quite noisy, even though there were very few people on this level. Flooring is predominantly carpet with shades of grey and yellow in the seating areas, and parquet wood style flooring in the walkways. Paintwork was a mixture of cream on the upper part of the walls and a pastel shade of green down below, whilst there was also wooden cladding elsewhere. Seating was a mixture of regular tables and chairs, high stools, bench seating in front the window and a Chesterfield sofa or two. Various cushions were scattered around, and there were some old black and white photographs on the wall. I didn’t really inspect the upper level, but did note that there seem to have been several more shades of pastel paint used for the decor.

Unusually for a modern pub, the beer was dispensed directly from barrels racked up on stillage behind the bar. Unfortunately though, despite four available slots, only one was in use dispensing Butcombe Original, so nothing too exciting there. Perhaps there may be a better choice on occasions. Ciders meanwhile were Ashton Press and Blackthorn which is unusual to see these days. Overall I thought they’d done a decent enough job of this, and whilst I wouldn’t make a point of going here especially, I’d quite happily pop in again if passing, and may well sample the food next time.
