Now with the more pub-like name Torr Vale Tap, since August 2023, and with a couple of hand pumps on the bar. One had a cider (no idea if it is considered "real" by Camra), while the other named a beer but had those dreaded words "coming soon" attached. This was at 5pm on Saturday, which doesn't suggest much of a commitment to real ale. Camra's WhatPub says that the keg taps are serving "live beer", and I had a half of Torrside Interim Measures, a 6.4% red IPA that poured a little lively, but when topped up came without a head. On tasting it was a little cold and fizzy for me, but there was a decent beer trying to make its appearance. It may be live beer, but I've had beer from cans and bottles that was more like the real thing than this; I'm still not sold on keg dispense despite Camra's efforts. The place was lively with a Saturday crowd that included people of all ages, including a few children; dogs are allowed but must be on a lead. I found a table in the overspill area below the main bar room. I had just 20 minutes after walking from New Mills Newtown and before having to leave to catch my train from New Mills Central. This would be a good place to stop a bit longer between trains in warmer weather; maybe I could become accustomed to this "live beer - keg dispense" thing.

Will Larter left this review about The Shrub Club

A cafe bar occupying part of the semi-derelict Torr Vale Mill. It is easily reached by walking from either of the two New Mills railway stations: just under five minutes from Central (or from the bus stop in the town) and a bit longer than 10 from Newtown, so would make a good refreshment stop if going by train from Sheffield to Buxton and back. The interior is smartly done up, and bright in the morning sunshine, and there is a beer terrace with bench tables and parasols (or are they umbrellas?) with a spectacular view down to the Millennium Walkway. The bar counter has a large Budvar font centrally placed and a group of five keg taps, mostly serving beers from local Torrs Brewery. Beers are listed on a smallish blackboard to the right of the bar. There's one hand pump but it's slightly hidden and obviously disused. (There's also a Whiskey Cask cider which I assume is in a polypin, as I didn't see it on the bar counter.)

It was a bit early in the day for a beer - the cafe is open at 10am but has pub-like closing times advertised - so I took my coffee out to take in the view and enjoy some sunshine before walking to Newtown for my train. A pity there's no real ale here, but given the position of the bar, it's quite likely that there wouldn't be sufficient turnover to make it viable. I wouldn't mind coming back to try the local beers another time, though. (Their Facebook page shows them currently closed on Tuesdays, but this may be because of staff shortages so could change.)
