A relatively recent opening on the up and coming Church Road strip, this was a bank in a former life and has now been converted in to a pub by the same team behind Southville’s Spotted Cow. It’s a somewhat cavernous space inside, and the double height floor to ceiling windows let in plenty of natural light, which is perhaps just as well given the predominantly rather dark colour scheme.

Décor wise, it’s quite rustic with some sort of concrete screed on the floor and areas of exposed brickwork, including the bar counter which has been set in to what was presumably a separate room previously. A hole has been cut in to the wall to make the counter area with a large supporting steel joist above. Elsewhere are some areas of dark khaki paintwork on the walls, whereas the high ceiling was painted black with visible cable trays and so on. Some quite enormous speakers were suspended from the ceiling, and this along with a couple of turntables off to one side suggest that music must feature prominently on occasions. Seating was mostly simple wooden tables and basic school style chairs, although there was also some turquoise banquette seating set in to pods along one wall. Many of the tables downstairs were reserved, although there was also a mezzanine level floor with plenty of free seating.

Beers on tap were all local with Bristol Beer Factory’s Fortitude and Diamond Lake, Twisted Oak’s Crack Gold and Dawkins Bristol Best. Ciders meanwhile were Symonds Founder’s Reserve and North Street. Overall, whilst this isn’t the cosy sort of pub that I normally go for, I thought they’d done an impressive job of the conversion and it’s nice to see buildings being converted to pubs, rather than the other way around for a change.
