Attractive micropub located a short step off the seafront. My first stop on a pub research trip to Brid, and the owner was very welcoming, chatty and informative. (Full disclosure: we are both Camra members and have joined in discussions on the Discourse forum.) Four hand pumps (see photo) with two beers I would tend to avoid (Tiramisu porter and passion fruit pale, on the grounds of additives and strength), which left me with Acorn Barnsley Bitter that I was drinking last night at one of my locals in Sheffield, or the Wensleydale Chaos & Calm (NBSS 3.5 or 4), a pale ale at 4% that was just right for an eight pub day out in a town that was new to me. Being a fan of traditional beers or modern pales with clean hoppy flavours, I might struggle for something to drink if I was a regular here, but I would certainly call in again if in Brid. Regional pub of the year for Yorkshire.

The best known micro in Brid’ due to it’s award winning status. Four pulls on the small counter with smaller brewery’s beers, today they were from Acorn, Yorkshire Dales, Jolly Sailor, Mallinsons, and there’s one keg fount with Freedom Lager, the casks will of course change constantly. It’s small with cafe style seating, a tiny counter at the back by stairs and toilets, even managing to squeeze in a darts board. Pump clip and hop bine decor with a few old photos. More seating upstairs on sofas in the main. Must be the top place in Brid’.

Situated in a former sweet shop and with a handy location between the station and the beach, this is a very friendly and welcoming micropub that opened just as the pandemic and first lockdown were getting underway. As you’d expect from a shop-converted micropub, space is at a bit of a premium, with a compact, square ground-floor room offering a few tables and chairs arranged into three rows in a lino floored room with plain painted walls and large shop windows to the front. This is offset somewhat by a staircase to the rear right, which leads up to an overspill room where additional seating can be found, although we preferred to stay downstairs where there seemed to be a better atmosphere. A small timber framed counter stands in the rear left corner and has a row of handpulls on the bar for drawing the cask ale and a taproom out the back where ciders are brought though from. A board to one side lists the full draught range whilst another tacked to the bar back details a few bar snack options such as sausage rolls and scotch eggs. Unusually, the pub does food every Wednesday, offering just one meal option per week for a tenner, with a free pint to wash it all down. A couple of support beams around the room have been decorated with pint glasses and tankards and there was a collection of board games and books in a shelving unit in the front left corner, whilst a bookcase by the entrance held a selection of old Good Beer Guides. A few tables and chairs were also arranged on the pavement outside, although there’s nothing much of interest to look at out there.
Cask options on this visit were Sunbeam Ales Sunseeker, Acorn Summer Pale, Chin Chin Cracking Flags and North Riding Ice Cream Porter. The latter was a very reasonable £3.50 for a pint of delicious, chocolaty porter that will probably end the year as my most memorable pint of 2021. The landlord was very friendly, engaging with all of his customers including spending some time making local restaurant recommendations to us after we’d mentioned our difficulties finding decent eateries around town.
I thought this was a great little micropub with a very relaxed, chatty feel to it and what was easily the best kept beer I found in Bridlington. The place maybe lacks a bit of character still, having only been open to customers for a few months when we visited, having spent more time operating as a take-out venture through various lockdowns, but I’m sure it’ll bed in nicely and become the town’s must-do venue.
