This is a fairly decent sized micropub and bottle shop which thankfully feels more like a pub than a shop. The usual single room set-up applies, across a stone tile floored room with a narrow, but quite deep, interior. A mix of pews, chairs and high stools serve a number of tables down the left-hand wall, whilst to the right there are several fridges and shelving units full of beer bottles and cans. These eventually give way to the servery with its rather drab counter and smart glazed tile bar back with around twenty keg taps lined across it. The keg range is listed across the bar’s canopy, whilst a TV screen on the opposite wall cycles through the full draught range. The room extends a surprising distance to the rear, through a couple of rather uninteresting seating areas with plenty of chairs but little in the way of visual distraction. The main part of the pub is much nicer, featuring a wall decorated with various banknotes from around the world, a mural made from old beer bottle labels and front windows strung with fairy lights and topped with some fine old stained glass panes. A chilled reggae-based soundtrack chugged away in the background and there was a modest Friday night crowd in attendance.
Alongside the aforementioned twenty craft keg options and countless bottles and cans, there were also three handpulls in operation, dispensing Castle Rock Hop Around The World, Three Blind Mice Mittens Stout and Brew York Calmer Chameleon. I gave the latter a try and thought it was a mediocre beer served up in good condition by a pleasant barmaid.
I found this to be quite a good micropub, with well-kept beer, lots of keg options and some comfortable seating options. I liked it more than some of the town’s other micro pubs and would say it’s a pretty solid bet if you’re looking to take in a few good watering holes without straying too far from the station.

Looking at previous reviews and photos of this place shortly after its opening it looks like it was originally much more of a bottle shop with a small DIY serving area bolted on. But my visit last week found most of the previous bottle racks gone in preference to bench seating and a solid bar serving area on the right which now supports 20 keg beer taps and four real ale pumps, with all the available beers being displayed on long boards above the bar.
So, not really a bottle shop and too big to be referred to as a micro pub, this shop conversion is a really good modern beer bar if my early Friday evening visit was anything to go by. It was being well utilised and was quite lively, maybe because we caught it during its Octoberfest promotion which, if one is ever needed, is a clear invitation to don the leather shorts and some of the bar staff were fully embracing this.
Clearly craft keg is the main draw here and alongside a good selection of German lagers for the event there was a very decent line up of all different craft ale styles and strengths from the UK and beyond. But you have to choose carefully as some of these had loopy ABV’s and matching loopy price levels. For example the Castle Rock / Emperor collaboration 11% Imperial stout mentioned in reviews relating to previous visits was still available and now at £7 for a third or £10 for a half. No pint serving offered and not surprising given the ABV and the fact that you would get no change from a Turner.
However I was in Burton to sample the local cask products and good to find Heritage Brewing Masterpiece, Burton Bridge Conqueror and Castle Rock Let England Shake on the hand pumps alongside Little Critters Blonde Bear from the Sheffield based brewery, and the couple we tried were in good condition. And with the Castle Rock brew at £3.50 a pint for a 4.2% beer this was much more pleasing to both my wallet and intended state of inebriation at the end of the evening.
Although I personally would still choose the Coopers Arms or the Burton Bridge Tavern as my preferred type of beer drinking establishment I thoroughly appreciated this one and thought it an excellent recent addition to the Burton Beer drinking scene and I wish it well.

Our Burton crawl certainly came up with some surprises and this was certainly one of them, especially when they were hosting an Oktoberfest. The owner was dressed in full traditional Bavarian costume and was drinking steins of lager. I tried one of the festival offerings on tap, served from the back wall of the bar, the German Helles Lager which was excellent, plus there was a good atmosphere on our early evening visit.
