This is a large beach-side pub, diner and, judging by my recent visit, creche-like facility on the West coast of the island, ideal for anyone who has been relaxing on the beach or exploring the fine nature reserve over the road. The pub consists of two large open-plan rooms, each remarkably featureless with large windows along one side looking out to the sea wall. The first room is fairly casually furnished with lots of basic tables and chairs dotted around the room, a pool table occupying a far corner and a pizza counter over to one side, all topped of with an unholy amount of kids running amok. Thankfully, the second room felt a little calmer, with a vaguely more formal layout of standard and high tables throughout the room and a very busy kitchen serving hatch on the back wall dishing out plenty of pub favourites. Décor is mainly limited to blackboards listing various food and drink options and some rather cliched beach-themed items such as pictures of surfers, with the implication that the surfing on the beach outside is pretty good and would likely attract such a crowd to the pub in the summer months. It goes without saying that there is a large patio outside, facing the sea, but this wasn’t so appealing in the howling wind and driving rain that greeted us on arrival. A couple of large TV screens were showing live rugby union and the pub has a good-sized car park as well as a bus stop directly outside.
There is no cask ale available here – just ice-cold lager for surfer dudes to sip in the sun. I had a pint of some generic mega-brand lager which was reasonably priced but wholly unsatisfying. The food is pretty robust, unfussy fayre and the waitress who served us was very friendly in the face of long queues for food and the aforementioned feral children.
This place reminded me of a large community centre rather than a proper pub and I found it a really unappealing place to spend time in. Clearly the pub comes into its own when the sun is shining and I may well have left with a more favourable impression had I visited in the summer, but based on this cold, wet February visit, there was nothing here that would entice me back.
